Astonishingly beautiful photography from Mia Stålnacke @angrytheinch “A long time ago in a galaxy far far away, light set off on an epic journey. Travelling through the vastness of space for 2.5 million years before eventually, one dark starry night, colliding with your eyes. Letting you see an image of what it was all that time ago.”
The Curiosity Mars Rover has begun the 10th year of its mission on Mars. What an incredible feat of engineering – this artefact on another planet is still performing research tasks. Despite harsh conditions, it’s lasted longer than many electronic devices we commonly use here on Earth. @nasa #curiosity
Q&A with Maggie Aderin-Pocock this morning. Discussing if there is intelligent life in the Universe, the James Webb space telescope and the new BBC Series “Universe”.
A shot from our Horizons warm-up show in Reading. Here you can see multiple galaxy clusters and light being bent due to gravitational effects. While this image looks full of galazies, each with hundreds of billions of stars, the fact is that most of the universe is pretty empty.
Black Holes in Basingstoke (Horizons warm-up show). This sequence (it’s a simulation – created from actual physics) was rendered by D-Neg using code developed for “Interstellar” and shows gravitational lensing around a black hole. #science #horizons
And talking of spaceships … @nasa is preparing the Ingenuity helicopter for first flight on April 11th. This will be the first ever powered, controlled flight of an aircraft on another planet. They’ve also open-sourced the flight software and embedded systems frameworks – head over to GitHub and search “fprime” for more info.
I call this one “Cat resting on hifi under table” …
Currently busy writing a book on Black Holes with Jeff Forshaw. I thought I’d share a diagram with you, for no particular reason other than you can see how ‘hand-drawn’ they are when we scribble them, and compare that with how lovely they’ll be when an actual artist remakes them 🙂 #physics #blackholes #horizons2021
Winter in Sydney
Wow … now that’s what I call a spaceship! The beautiful SpaceShip3 just unveiled by @virgingalactic is simply stunning. Hey @colchrishadfield when can we take this up for a spin?!
