Harry Shum Jr. Instagram – 🎶 in one ear :: 😴 in the other
Harry Shum Jr. Instagram – Very excited to partner and help launch AAPI Storytime with @theconsciouskid & @wongfupro to celebrate AAPI Heritage Month. More on this tomorrow but please read below on the meaningful work that my friends @theconsciouskid have done and continue to do to help fight anti-Asian racism in America. Link in my bio for more info.
—————————————————• @theconsciouskid Out of all racial groups, Asian Americans receive the least attention in school curriculum and textbooks. The invisibility and erasure of Asian history, contributions, and experiences, and the limited stereotypical depictions we do see, cannot be separated from the violence targeting Asian communities—or the alarming rise in anti-Asian hate crimes that have been happening across the country.

In an effort to amplify Asian American stories, we teamed up with @harryshumjr and Asian-owned media company, @wongfupro, on a series of Asian American storytime read-alouds. Together, we are dedicated to making sure Asian voices and stories are represented in classrooms and curriculum, and that anti-Asian bias and stereotypes are countered from an early age. These read-alouds will be featured on the YouTube Kids app each week this month, starting tomorrow.

To further support the inclusion of Asian American stories in classrooms, we are donating a curated list of children’s books by Asian authors (featured above and in our Stories) to preschools and elementary schools across the country. In partnership with Google for Education, who has been an ongoing and invaluable partner to us in supporting inclusive classrooms, we are able to fund a significant donation of these titles. Thanks to their generous contribution of $100,000, we will be able to provide these books free to educators in over 1,000 schools across the country.

If you would like to join us in this effort to reach even more schools or are a Title I preschool or elementary school teacher interested in receiving a free set of these titles, please click the link in our profile (theconsciouskid.org/aapistorytime). Thank you for your commitment to counter anti-Asian racism and to share, center and celebrate Asian American voices and stories.
