A little known fact about me: As a kid growing up on a farm in rural South Africa, my only friends were animals. I’m not kidding, my best friend was my goat, Bok. Once I moved to the US, it became clear that I couldn’t move my pet goat into a NYC apartment…..but dogs were everywhere I looked –– and I haven’t been without one since.
@bestfriendsanimalsociety is ALWAYS the first place I go when I need a new furry heart in my life. If you ask me, pet adoption is the only way to go. This fall, animal shelters across the country are overwhelmed at capacity, putting tons of lives of homeless dogs and cats at risk. If I could save them all, I would (trust me), but this is gonna take all of us.

Last week, I had the honor of going on @cbsmornings with @darrencwalker of @fordfoundation to talk about something that means the world to me: Equitable access to healthcare across the world, particularly in my home country of South Africa. For 14 years my nonprofit @ctaop has supported community-based organizations in Southern Africa with the passionate belief that they know what’s best for their communities. This remains the same with COVID, and we’re seeing many patterns we’ve seen with HIV repeat themselves when it comes to unbalanced and inconsistent access to healthcare, and the constant battling of misinformation. We at CTAOP will continue to support our Partners on the ground, and are proud to stand beside Ford Foundation in our commitment to combat widespread inequality in global vaccine supply, distribution, and access.

The disparity of access to the COVID-19 vaccine remains one of the greatest barriers to moving past this global crisis. My home country of South Africa has only been able to administer 17 million doses so far – with the vaccination rate across the continent of Africa standing at just 5%. Meanwhile, 17 of the G20’s member states have already vaccinated at least two-thirds of their populations. That’s why I and @CTAOP decided to speak out on the absolute cruciality of vaccine equity. We are so proud to join forces with the revolutionary @darrencwalker & @fordfoundation in calling on the G20 to redistribute vaccine supply, reinvest in medical and civil-society infrastructure, fight misinformation and reimagine our global systems with equity, justice, and collaboration at their core.
