This #WorldMentalHealthDay a reminder that the majority of us are privately struggling to transcend our trauma, our wounds, our stories. I know I am, and I have been a long, long time. And that’s okay, particularly if you consider as I do, that life is about personal growth and growth is rarely simple or easy. Each of us is a living, vital bridge connecting our past to the present. What has made a difference recently, is the growing collective awareness that there is no shame in acknowledging our mental health issues. At least I decided to side step the stigma and silence. No time for it! After all, to be human is a huge, messy-joyful experiment and it’s exhausting to pretend otherwise. We need to provide safe spaces for us to talk about mental illness because that’s where we can access support, find professional help and where the healing begins.

The sweetness and rightness of locating oneself, of orienting oneself to what’s true and important is captured for me, in the essence of @pahadilocal (Yes, I’m in Mumbai and yes, I’m a mountain girl at heart)

A remarkable narrative of a remarkable woman, told through the body with sly wit, rich anecdotes and sharp prose. #OneFootontheGround deserves to be read widely as #ShantaGokhale should be celebrated for her pioneering feminism, achievements and general bad assery. And for letting her gaze meet the world at a time when women were celebrated for lowered eyes and demure demeanours. Also further proof of ‘don’t judge a woman by her sari’.

#VivekShanbhag has been described as the Indian Chekhov. I’m not sure why this description bothers me. I know he’s a wondrous talent. We don’t need to compare him to a dead Russian writer.
Owning India’s contemporary literary legacy as well as highlighting its rich legacy is a far more interesting endeavour. The problem is it takes effort and invites nuance as well as an impulse to step outside the coded discussions of literary establishment.
Or maybe I suffer from PTSD of playing Masha in drama school one too many times.
Anyhow I’ll let you know once I’m done.

What a captivating read. This is a book for a post-truth era, which ironically makes #ATimeOutsidethisTime an eminently timely novel. Nuggets and nuggets of absorbing stories with an ear for the uncanny and hope for humanity even in the midst of this maddening moment of our history.
