It has been a very challenging year in the Amazon rainforest of Brazil, many great leaders were lost, indigenous lands were invaded and exploited. The floods in Acre destroyed many plantations, homes, and drinking water sources. These floods also brought multiple illnesses to indigenous children and elderly living in the villages. At the same time, the floods have brought many organizations, who protect and preserve the people and the cultures of the Amazon rainforest, together in a great alliance to help them recover.
Matsini will share a traditional story and ancestral wisdom. The Yawanawa stories were passed down orally from generation to generation for thousands of years. This is the way they were taught to keep their wisdom and tradition alive and they continue to pass them down to their children and families. These stories bring insights and new perspectives to the way of life in the rainforest and bring awareness of times from long ago that are still relevant today, showing us a glimpse into the ancient history of the Amazon and the Yawanawa culture.
We will hear songs and receive ancient blessings from Matsini’s son Kuru and daughter Kenesay, who have been studying with their father and their family in Mutum village since they were young children. These songs bring healing and connection to the ancestors of their family, their culture, and the spirits of the animals of the forest. “I love to sing so much. When I sing I am expressing myself, and when I am in the force I sing and I can feel that I was born for this. It is something almost unexplainable,” Kenesay Yawanawa.
Kuru is on his way to becoming a Pajé (master shaman), following his ancestors’ footsteps and legacy in Mutum. He studies the Yawanawa traditions and prayers constantly and is an inspiration to his community. His prayers are powerful and very focused. He will become a Pajé in the next couple years, when he’s old enough to take the sacred oath.
