Happy 52nd to a legendary linguist and master lyricist #jayz whose words evoke passions and thoughts that not only fill albums, but populate minds with images and ideas that spur reflection and challenge beliefs while moving behinds, before moving their brains even more!
So honored to grace the cover of Rolling Out magazine (@rollingout), a flagship publication of the great Munson Steed (@munsonsteed), to talk about my latest book and the issues and concerns of Black America. The magazine will debut tomorrow, and I’m excited for you to read my conversation with Steed about Black performance, politics and social practices that shape and reflect who we are as a people!
#IStandWithJulius Posted @withregram • @vanjones68 #JusticeForJulius! Please SHARE to save an innocent man’s life! Swipe ➡️ for more information about his case from @so.informed: 🚨 Julius Jones is scheduled to be wrongfully executed by the state of Oklahoma THIS week. 🚨 There is absolutely no reason why this should happen. Governor Kevin Stitt’s own Pardon and Parole Board TWICE recommended that Julius be spared from this execution. Playing politics with the life of an innocent individual who has already been subjected to 20 years of wrongful incarceration is cruel. But that’s the thing about the death penalty—every single aspect of it is cruel. I am encouraging each of you to use your voice for Julius Jones over the next several days. Make phone calls to Governor Stitt’s office, send an email, and urge your elected officials to use THEIR platforms to speak out against this wrongful execution. There is power in using your voice. And there is even MORE power when we use our voices collectively #JuliusJones @justiceforjulius

I lauded #GregTate directly for his “majestic sweep of black poetry & the epic grasp of Emersonian, even Protean, self-reinvention – a place where Malcolm X meets Iceberg Slim & shakes hands with Daddy Grace & Miles Davis in edifying brazenness!” Praise Black genius when you can!
In my just published book “Entertaining Race: Performing Blackness in America”— which I’m honored to say is an #Amazonbestseller — all of the quotes that front the book divisions are drawn from the work of Black women! ✊🏽 Just a small way to recognize the intellectual labor and cultural imagination of creative Black female thinkers.👊🏾 They include @ruha9 @domorisseau @vudivinitydean @smftphd @shanalredmond @nifleetwood (before the “genius” award!) @fjasmine23 #margaretburnham @lempressjosephine @sharpleywhiting #hortensespillers @d.soyini #terahunter @tamikadmallory Love you all!❤️

“This is by far the most moving, cerebral, poetic, emotional, and soulful summing up of what it meant to share time with an extraordinary thinker and critic #gregtate (@avantgroidd ), from another extraordinary thinker and critic (@ellezakelley ). May Greg Tate’s memory be a blessing to those who knew and loved him, a lesson for those who followed him, and a pathway for those yet to learn his work.” MED Posted @withregram • @ellezakelley I took this picture in 2013, at studio museum I think. For some reason, blurriness of the blackberry camera notwithstanding, I felt like it captured Greg’s essence: his status as the mayor of black Bohemia, as many of us called him. But he was also a friend and the closest I had to a stepfather, a regular presence that I always imagined would be there. We talked about stupid things, silly tv, sci fi, art, literature, the new rappers I forced on him, everything. Even as a teenager, he took me seriously as an intellectual, he followed me down the most circuitous paths of unreasonable reasoning—he gave me confidence that my cockamamie theories had validity, that my rambles made a place, that my labyrinthine thoughts had shape and coherence. He assured me that it was brave and good to find gold where other people see trash. He taught me that making up your own language was important, that you had to say what you meant and that required invention, style, creativity and bravery. And we laughed. And he loved my mother. And wow did she love him. I was raised in the world that his writing comes from, I never knew anything else. I don’t think of him as a intellectual influence, though he was. Instead I think of him as a family member, as a dear friend, as a member of my heart. We are blessed to have your words but what I will miss most is your cool quiet calming presence, sitting on the edge of a room with me not saying much but taking it all in, feeling and watching and listening lightly, open to the possibility that even in brilliant critique and analysis, everything has some greatness in it. We will miss you so much, our great kind wise mayor. And we will love you forever. ❤️
Posted @withregram • @marcia_l_dyson People ask me what I do. Well, you could read my bio link. However, first and foremost I am a social activist. I work with many organizations around the world. But today I want to highlight Coalition of Hope. I am on the governmental and public affairs committee for COH. We’ve been working on for over 10 years to revamp two naval vessels which could aid USA & our global citizens in need of first disaster relief on a massive scale. Project Excelsior is finally being introduced to Congress via amendment 4574 to the National Defense Authorization Act to help affect the transfer of vessels to the Coalition of Hope. These vessels would be able to help our citizens especially on coastal areas doing floods and hurricanes. We would be able to pick up thousands an international crisis such as Haiti. We have been vetted by the Dept. of Defense and the State Dept. and were able to do covert operations in rescuing Americans & Afghans after USA departure from Afghanistan this summer. If you are involved in a major organization we would appreciate your letters of support for our endeavors. Amendment 4574 will be presented in less than two weeks. Please DM me if you can help promote this Herculean global aid. 🙏🏽 Visit: (Marcia’s bio link) www.coalitionofhope.org @cbcinstitute @cthagod @teamroc @robertfredericksmith @elonofficiall
