William Levy Instagram – The protests that have erupted over the past year have made history. All of them were citizens who exercised their God given freedom to demand justice from those in power. Whether it’s about civil rights, police reform, immigration, voting, tax policy, women’s rights, these protests all require one thing… freedom. This is what makes the protests in Cuba so different than the others. Their freedom was stolen over 60 years ago. For decades Cubans couldn’t demand justice because they had no voice. They have no right to speak, to assemble, to organize and be heard. This freedom is something so many in the free world take for granted. Today I see thousands in the streets of Havana declaring “we are not afraid!” and I am humbled by their bravery… As a boy in Cuba I watched as my family members were imprisoned for less. And we all know the stories of Cubans who were tortured and executed for daring to speak out against those in power. I know firsthand how high the stakes are. In an era of unprecedented demands for civil rights and social justice, it’s time that these demands apply to the Cuban people too. These people in the streets are risking everything to ensure that their children can be free, and they deserve all of our support.
