How many times have you seen a video of “Deaf Person Hearing for the First Time” before? Perhaps more than you can count. What hearing people don’t realize is that these videos do more harm than good. It is a constant reminder that Deaf people are broken therefore need to be fixed. The truth is that Deaf people are tired of the same videos circulating around a million times. What about life’s other firsts? The first smile, sign, laugh, midnight snack, walk, flight, potty (or attempt at potty mouth), and Deaf school.
There are countless of life moments that makes us human including Deaf people. Layered. Three-dimensional. After all, there is more to life than just hearing. So, the next time you watch one of these videos and are about to share… I encourage to think twice and share other videos about Deaf people beyond hearing.

Living with Deaf family members does mean that we must get creative on how to get their attention. Even we throw something at them! 🔴🧦 Yelling loudly that the entire neighbor can hear.💥Flashing the lights.💡If on FaceTime or Zoom, waving closely to the camera does the trick. 👋 And so much more! Which way do you get a Deaf person’s attention? 😉

Sign language is beautiful, but also dangerous… so many times we’ve had our glasses flying off, knocked over glasses, poked in our face or someone else’s, and the worst part, bumped into a pole! At least, there’s a ton of giggles once it’s over! 😂🤣😅 How many of you can relate to this?!?

Holidays are hard in so many ways for Deaf people coming from a hearing family. In fact, 90% of Deaf people are from a hearing family. Most of them don’t sign or learn how to sign.
There’s a lot of small talk in between, head nodding, and fake laughs at the holiday gatherings. Eventually, Deaf people find ways to keep them entertained through books, TV, movies, or social media. Some choose to leave early. If there is one, there’s this hearing mom who interprets everything (and that’s impossible to do!). Take the burden off them and give them the gift of full inclusion.
AND…Don’t just do this for the holidays only, but year round, every day.

For so long, hearing people have always been curious if Deaf people in their dreams can hear, speak, and understanding hearing people.

There are some challenges on social media that Deaf people are much much better at than hearing people! The hand challenge is one of them. We’re lightning fast and don’t even blink… ⚡️😉

And to give each side of the bedroom our own look that fits our unique personality. Mine’s all about the orange, flowers, and elephants! @ivymansfield is all about the rainbows, unicorns, and everything magical. 👯♀️✨🌈 🦄 🌸 🐘

I’ve said before that some Deaf people do enjoy and experience music in their own ways. As for me, I do not hear words at all. How I experience music is by reading the lyrics, wearing a headphone, turning the volume way up, and most important of all, marching to my own beat. The best part I sign along, not sing along! Very much like hearing people, I sign with a variety of emotions to express what this “Lost Boy” song by @itsruthb truly means to me. Purely in my own language which requires time to translate from English. It’s not perfect but I’m getting there!
And if you’re wondering if the sounds are turned off, it is. Time for hearing people to experience music visually and through feeling. To all the lost boys and girls, this is for you. 🤟
