Decades ago Helen and I auditioned together for a film. I came home and said to Emma “I think I’ve just met the greatest actress I’ve ever seen.” After years of watching her mesmerize audiences I don’t think that any more…I know it. Luckily, I eventually found out that she was also scabrously funny, shockingly naughty and with an empathetic heart the size of a planet. As continually starstruck as I was on the Harry Potter films, being screen-married to and giggle with the great Helen McCrory will always be a highlight. Her proudest achievement, though, was building and loving the family that was her bedrock. They’ve lost so much and I send all my love to Damian and the kids. xxx

2020 has been heartbreaking for many, challenging for others. Hate, selfishness and fear were everywhere. But love, kindness and hope eclipsed them. 2021 won’t be easy: I wish all of us a daily hit of gratitude for life, the people we love and opportunities to make things better. If things continue to get worse – as they definitely will for a while – then the very least we must demand is honesty from the people making decisions about our lives and humility from ourselves in the face of science. My beautiful wife Emma and I in Sep 1998 looking pretty happy. We weren’t. 3 weeks later, on October 5th, 22 years ago today, I managed 24 hours without taking any drugs or drinking alcohol. I’d tried for decades, but was too smart, too capable and too successful to pull it off. Only when I admitted that I needed help did my life change. Thank you to every addict and alcoholic who’s ever lifted me up. I love you all – especially the mad ones. Which is most of you. I don’t like self promotion as a rule, but #MassMovie, a truly independent film, maybe the best I’ve ever been in, is a magnificent plea for human connection across any divide and an incredibly moving evocation of the spiritual power of forgiveness. Both of which have never been more necessary. An urgent, beautiful, uplifting work of art. Not incidentally, you’ll never see more human and inspiring acting than from #MarthaPlimpton, #AnnDowd and #ReedBirney. I’m in it too, but just to make them look better. Now available to download.
