So excited to share this with you all. My dear friend, the brilliant journalist and writer Maria Hinojosa @maria_la_hinojosa has published her new book Once I Was You. Just received my signed copy in the mail and I couldn’t be more thrilled. Earlier this year I was honored when Maria asked me to read the galley proof of what was to be her new book. I was a huge fan of Raising Raúl, her chronicle of motherhood and parenting. She has the gift of taking her own personal experience of a subject and examining it through a universal lens. Here she tackles immigration in the U.S. She tells us the story of her own family’s migration to this country and through that examines the current state of things. She gets to the hard truths. As a first-generation Mexican American, her story hits close to home. I encourage you all to pick up a copy. (Note: maybe you’ll catch my name in the acknowledgments in the back!!) “Anyone striving to understand and improve this country should read her story.” – Gloria Steinem

RIP. QEPD. #rudolfoanaya too much death. I don’t know what else to say other than one of the great honors of my career was appearing in Carl Franklin’s cinematic adaptation of the great Chicano classic, Rudolfo Anyaya’s Bless Me, Ultima. If you haven’t read it yet, do yourself a favor. The novel is timeless. I was lucky to have crossed paths with Maestro Anaya. He was kind and generous. Those are things you don’t take for granted. Thank you for your time and your gifts, señor.

Say her name. #Repost @melinnabobadilla ・・・ Today is Breonna Taylor’s 27th birthday, but she isn’t here to celebrate her next rotation around the sun because her life stolen on March 13th, 2020 when Louisville police entered her home without warning and killed her. Breonna was a critical health worker and had been working long hours as an EMT during the Covid crisis. Breonna deserved to see all her dreams to fruition, which her mother Tamika Palmer said included becoming a nurse, buying a home and starting a family. Now, at the very least, she deserves JUSTICE.🤍🤍🤍 Breonna’s murderers still walk free and it is up to all of us to keep up the pressure until they are charged. . . On May 21, the FBI’s Louisville office announced they were opening an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death. Since these legal announcements, there has been little movement in Taylor’s case. The three officers involved in her shooting are still on administrative leave, according to the Louisville Courier-Journal. But they have not been arrested or charged with any crimes. It rests with all of us to continue DEMANDING #JusticeForBreonnaTalor🤍 SAY HER NAME🤍 Beautiful artwork by @precious.lord 🤍 list or resources on 3rd image #BlackLivesMatter #SayHerName #BreonnaTaylor #BirthdayForBreonna
