I’m realizing that I’ve been somewhat emotionally guarded and emotionally unavailable for much of my adult life. By being emotionally unavailable I’ve stunted my own growth in several areas of my life. Lately, I’ve been working on being more vulnerable, as well as more emotionally honest. Want to be a better example for the kids. Want to break past my glass ceilings. Want to honor the abundance of love coming my way. ❤️
#FlashbackFriday to a time when the only thing I knew for sure, was that I would eventually graduate high school and become successful enough to take custody of my younger brother… which I did. . . . Baby face with the hustle, determination and hunger of a young lion.
I’M THE BIRTHDAY BOY! 🎂🎊🎉🎁What a life! What a life! What a LIFE!! . . . For the first time I feel inspired to celebrate my #birthday! . . . Why? Because while writing a @tijuanajackson sketch, I realized part of the reason I’ve never been inspired to celebrate my birthday, is because I didn’t believe I was worth being celebrated. . . . But turning 53 has hit differently. It’s not the age that has me feeling more inspired. It’s the humbling realization of how flawed and closed off I’ve been. It’s the gratitude for being able to see, rectify and even accept my shortcomings. It’s the appreciation for the people who love and accept me with my flaws. It’s finally overcoming fear of judgment. It’s being able to open up emotionally, and allow myself to love and be loved. It’s being comfortable with not knowing, needing help or needing mentorship. . . . I’ve NEVER been more comfortable in my own skin. I feel as though the pain throughout my earlier years has finally been trumped by the peace and acceptance of my later years. . . . For the first time in decades, I have crystal clear goals! For the first time in decades, I’m am genuinely grateful for everything and everyone who helped lead me to where I am today. I feel more capable now than I’ve felt in decades. . . But @tijuanajackson and I want you to know, happiness for us has more to do with peace of mind than anything else. It’s not about what we have. It’s about WHO we have, and what we have to give. ❤️👏🏾🎗 . . If you’re in it for the long game, prioritize purpose. 💯🙏🏾 #birthdayboy

I found myself jumping around and yelling with glee, like a child while with the family today. I realized in that moment I was happy. . . I felt grateful for things I used to take for granted. For the first time in a long while, I didn’t feel behind or the need to catch up. I didn’t feel as if I needed to be more successful, or doing more. . . I could feel the emotional work my better half and I have been doing, actually paying off. I could feel lessons from books I’ve been reading seeping in. . . I know happiness is fleeting, but I do understand what’s gotten me to this point, and I plan to do more of that. . . I’ve felt stuck for a while. But I’ve managed to crawl myself out from a well of dysfunction, and everyday i make choices that make me better than I was even before I fell into that well. . . This whole week I could feel myself shedding doubts around who I am, who I love, and who I’ve chosen to trust. . . I’m learning a lot, getting sound advice from mentors, and clearly seeing who’s here for me, and who doesn’t deserve to hear from me. . . I hold no grudges, partly because I believe I understand why some people are the way they are. Plus, begrudging others requires time and energy I have better use for. . . My world of family and friends is my priority, the magic ingredient, and my most valuable investment to date. ❤️ . . #HappyHolidays to all of you. Thank you for being so genuinely supportive. This is better said by @tijuanajackson, but the gist of it is, “emotionally unavailable people usually attract emotionally unavailable partners.” . . Looking back at my own life, I see how my (emotionally unavailable) style of communication made it practically impossible for me to find and maintain nurturing love. ❤️ I consistently attracted people who were emotionally unavailable, just like me! 😅🤷🏾♂️ . . Showing up emotionally for our partner (and people) involves a skill set that we should all be committed to learning.
