Alderwoman Rossana Rodriguez has introduced an order to create a city-wide crisis response system that would reduce CPD spending in order to invest in mental health care instead. The Order (Or2020-242) calls for the establishment of a 24-hour mental health crisis hotline and the creation of crisis response teams consisting of a social worker and a paramedic, with the goal of expanding public mental health clinics that prevent and respond to crisis situations. Because half of Chicago’s mental health clinics were closed in 2012, Chicagoans in need of mental health care ended up either on the street or in Cook County Jail. Tell City Council we need life-saving resources, not police.
