This Thursday, February 17th, ‘Picturing Black Girlhood: Moments of Possibility’, opens at Express Newark. The show explores the idea of black girlhood and how it’s considered to be an essential stage of development. We’re delighted to kick off #LandOfBrokenDreams, a large-scale multidisciplinary convening and concert series accompanying @carriemaeweems’ monumental exhibition #TheShapeOfThings. Opening the convening tonight (Dec. 9) Grammy-nominated singer @somimusic will appear in a stripped down setting to offer an evening of song that invites a deeper reflection on cultural intimacy and the body politic. On Friday and Saturday (Dec. 10–11), the convening will activate the Armory with a wide range of conversations, presentations, and performances featuring artists, poets, singers, dancers, thinkers, and scholars sharing work and exploring some of the most urgent issues facing society today. Friday’s convening concludes with two performances by composer/pianist @vijayiyer, with vocalist and composer @aroojaftabmusic, bassist and composer Linda May Han Oh, and trumpeter Adam O’Farrill. On Saturday, NEA Jazz Master and three-time Grammy Award-winning drummer, producer, and composer, @terrilynecarrington and Grammy Award-winning vocalist @l.i.s.a.f.i.s.c.h.e.r lead an all-star ensemble in a concert of improvised compositions, prompted by audience responses to and reflections on their experiences with #TheShapeOfThings and the #LandOfBrokenDreams convening.
