It’s not been easy to work creatively the past year. Today I started off training, but gave it up in the middle and started dancing.

Silence definitely has its benefits, but only until the time that it gives one the space needed to analyse one’s own emotions.
The ideal thing is to always be able to say the right thing at the right time, failing which, silence becomes the next best option.
But this ability to be able to say the right thing comes only when one is not only attuned to one’s own feelings but also to the other person’s feelings. It is possible when one has clarity of thought that is devoid of the play of emotions ….
(I’ve spoken in detail about this in my book finding Shiva)
But in order to have that umbrella of logical action, we must become extremely self aware….
Yoga , helps us cultivate body awareness…. It starts at a place where we become acutely aware of every movement and every muscle…. This is a stepping stone to a deeper more comprehensive awareness…
Today I’m going to try to dance/ practice yoga with no distractions and try to be extremely aware of every movement….

Today, and for the next few days I’m going to try to make a conscious effort to think of the other persons point of view rather than my own. Most often we are consumed by our own feelings, perceptions, opinions and thoughts. While in any situation- the simplest to the most complex – if one pauses for a moment to perhaps consider the other person’s feelings ….the manner in which one reacts or acts may change completely.

I know that for many women some small amount of lipstick or tinted chapstick, mascara, Kajal is a part of a daily routine. It certainly is for me as well. Many women wear even heavier make-up on a daily basis.
I know that I wear eyeliner on days when I feel a bit off. We’ve all done it… worn make up to feel better.
But why? Why should it make us feel better? It does nothing really….
I have absolutely nothing against dressing up. I definitely dress up a lot – it’s a part of my profession. But my value for myself cannot change based on the way that I look. I remain the same person irrespective of whether I have lipstick on or not.
This is something that I’ve done for myself…. And I’m just sharing it with all of you. I know it may not be easy, and many of us will feel awkward and naked… but it’s ok. You can try and let me know how it goes …
Reduce the make up that you wear step by step … it may take weeks… or months… but do it until you’re comfortable with yourself as you are.
Then you will be ok with make up and also perfectly alright without.
We need to know that every one of us is inherently whole and utterly beautiful ….
No #beautytips makes anyone more beautiful than they already are.

Today I’m going to try a combination of the self awareness and quiet time that I’ve done in the past week
– 5 mins in the morning and 5 mins in the evening with my thoughts and tea
– 20 mins of physical activity in silence
– no phone for half an hour before I sleep and 90 mins after I wake tomorrow morning.
Lastly, I’m going to try to watch any emotions that I may feel and act on any good quality that I feel I may posses. 😊

Morning yoga ….
I was supposed to start my mindfulness workshop this morning but after 40 mins of not being able to figure out what was wrong with zoom, I had to cancel class and do my own practice.

After strength training my muscles feel really tight, so I try to do yoga and stretch almost everyday. To function efficiently as dancers, we don’t just need strength in our muscles, we also need length and range of motion 😊

Day 14: #100daysofinnergrowth
While writing “Finding shiva” I thought a lot about the part that I play in the community. The value of arts… do I really do anything as a dancer ? What value do I add to the lives of people?
And although at times I feel that the arts don’t save lives like doctors, or build cities like urban planners… the arts have an unusual place in peoples lives.
We often think what we do is of less of more value, and I certainly have been through times where I’ve felt like what I do is not of much value in the larger sense. But that’s not true.
Every single one of us adds value in our own way as long as we are diligent and dedicated to what we do. No work is less or more. Each of us have a place in society and contribute to it in a unique way.
Today I spent a few moments to show that I value the work of those around me…. A gesture, a few words… sometimes that’s all it takes.

Day 11: #100daysofinnergrowth
I’ve learned the hard way that it’s always better to speak less and stay silent in times of confrontation, when one may say inappropriate things in an emotional state. This is a very difficult lesson and it’s taken me a long time to try to put it into practice. Hopefully, I will develop the mental ability to analyse my emotions and respond with clarity, but until then, I will attempt to stay silent… even if I desperately want to make a point .
I’m going to actively put this into practice the next few days.
Please know that all these things that I share are not random… I’ve been thinking deeply on this for more than two years and wanted to share some of the things that I’ve been working on with all of you. 😊
Almost all of it is inspired by Vedanta .

The digital detox for the morning and night definitely gets easier after a few days. 😊 3.5 hrs away from my phone this morning!
For today I’m going to try to do a breathing exercise that I learned when I was a child. I know it may just offer me some quiet, but the first few weeks are just about trying to get to be with myself in different ways.
So this is the exercise …
– 21 deep breaths
– counting backwards from 21
– if my mind wanders and I forget the count, I have to start at 21 again.
– no cheating by taking short breaths 😊
I’ve learned a lot about breathing calmly from being in the water….

Thoughts – Words – Actions
Thoughts are the impetus for words and actions. Many times we think of something and don’t act on it. Sometimes that’s a wonderful thing, if our thoughts are negative…. Other times it’s not so great because we have an idea and never act on it….
Today I’m going to spend time watching my thoughts through the day. Watching is not to judge or filter, but to just acknowledge that these thoughts exist in my mind…
In addition to watching, I’ll spend 10 minutes before I sleep analysing my thought flow during the day and whether or not my thoughts manifested into action.

Peanut butter 2 big spoons
Coconut milk 1 cup
Big piece of ginger
2 cloves garlic
Chopped coriander 2 big spoons
Salt
Red chilli powder or green chilli
3 spoons brown sugar Or honey
Soy sauce 2 spoons

Day 15: #100daysofinnergrowth
I want to consciously remove these phrases and anything of similar meaning form my vocabulary. “I did this for you” “everything I’ve done for you” etc.
In reality, no matter how selfless an act maybe, we ultimately do it for ourselves. We have satisfaction of having done the right thing in most cases. We have the joy of giving in some cases and we have the clear conscience of making an effort in other scenarios.
I remind myself of this often, but still sometimes my emotions get the better of me. So I thought maybe it would help to remove these phrases from my vocabulary altogether.
I don’t mean that removing implies that I don’t verbally express the feeling. I don’t even want to think that I’ve been magnanimous at any point of time….

I find that we are often very critical of our bodies. We find something wrong with many aspects and it’s important to celebrate our bodies as we are. I’m not saying that one need not work out or dress well to go out, but it’s the intention that matters. It we wear make-up and dress nicely with the intention of covering up perceived flaws it’s very different to dressing up to celebrate your body!
So celebrate your physical features with me. 😊
Yes I might look tired sometimes in these videos, but that’s real. I’m not always dressed for a dance performance or wearing make-up. This is how we all look on some days . And it’s ok 😁😁😁
It’s beautiful that our body changes to accommodate the stresses that we go through !

Carrying on with the idea of celebrating oneself, I thought that we could identify 1-3 good qualities that we possess and act on them. Very often our good qualities will have exceptions. And these exceptions affect the people around us. I might be diligent with respect to dance, but I might procrastinate something else.
I thought today we could extend the celebration of oneself to the circle around us by putting one of our good qualities into action.

Day 6: #100daysofinnergrowth
I always find that the phone has a way of sucking us in. It does give a lot of information and we learn a lot from the content that we are exposed to, but I also find myself looking at random things that neither offer learning, valuable artistic entertainment or any kind of growth.
I also find that it makes us “always available” ! This pressures is into replying to messages, emails, notifications immediately.
Especially early in the morning and just before bed I’ve found it mentally calming to stay away from my phone, especially emails and social media. I used to do this for a while, but then the digital world got the better of me again. There’s no difference whether I check an email at 6:30 am or 9 am .
