Hi all! My name is Siddharth Satish and I am a @UNICEF Youth Advocate and a member of the @UNICEFUSA National Youth Council. Thank you so much to Justin for lending me his platform today to speak more about the importance of climate action.
UNICEF’s data reveals that over half of the world’s children (~1 billion) live in extremely high-risk countries for climate change.
The impact of this crisis is most pronounced for those living in regions with reduced access to proper infrastructure and social services. In countries like Chad, Nigeria and the Central African Republic, there are increased levels of coastal flooding and cyclones which catalyze the spread of deadly diseases and put children’s lives at risk.
There are 33 countries designated as extremely high risk for climate change, and the combined carbon contribution of 32 of these countries is only 9% of the global total. The rest of the top 10 carbon emitting countries account for 70% of emissions, yet only one of them is deemed high risk for climate change. This goes to show how the biggest influencers of pollution aren’t the ones facing the consequences of their actions; rather, it is the smaller countries that are oceans away.
UNICEF works to help those suffering from the consequences of climate change and reduce the global carbon footprint. By operating the world’s largest humanitarian supply warehouse, the UNICEF network can ship essential humanitarian aid to any place within 48-72 hours. UNICEF also works with government partners to help reduce their nations’ carbon footprints, while encouraging global advocates, especially youth, to push for change in their communities.
Climate-conscious choices are no longer just a movement, but a reality that we all need to come to terms with. Tell your leaders to protect children from the indiscriminate and devastating impacts of climate change, using Justin’s link in bio.
