Truth, this will probably be the most vulnerable and truthful post I have ever made. Today, today we got the official diagnosis that our beautiful daughter is Autistic. It’s been a very emotional year in our home that only family and a few close friends know about. The frustration, the sleepless nights, the worry, the fear, it’s been one hell of a year. I’ve been very private about this because I wasn’t sure if I wanted to share this part of her or if I was ready but I am now. To have what you have suspected since she was a little over a year finally confirmed hits like a knife in the heart. I cry not because it changes anything about how much we love her, I cry because having an earlier diagnosis could have helped us know how she operates instead of trying to fit her into the typical box most children fit into. To say she has changed our lives is an understatement. She has taught us so much already and she will continue to be the greatest teacher not only to us but also to so many around her. We are lucky to have started her in therapy early in her life as most children/ families don’t have this option. I’ve had to fire therapists when I didn’t agree with their methods, advocate for her over and over, use an inner strength I honestly didn’t know I had. The isolation you feel when you learn your child is not like her peers is REAL. To wonder if she will ever speak, learn to drive, live on her own, date someone or even fall in love … these are some of the thoughts that race through my mind daily. To see the frustration my daughter goes through daily is heartbreaking but I can also say how proud of her I am at the huge strides she’s made in the past few months. I proudly wear the title Autism Mom. I will advocate not only for her but all people who have Neuro-diversity and who have spent their life being forced into a world that is not made for them. Sunday Funday with this Babe 💞 Quick Story: It took me literally 3 months of going to the carousel every weekend with Viv for her to not have a meltdown from the stimulus. A meltdown is different from a tantrum. Very different. It was all too much for her but I could see she wanted to ride the carousel and was always so excited so I created a routine she could grasp and I never derail from it. Ever. Andddddd today she LEAD ME through the steps! She bought the tickets. Yep, I make her hand money to cashiers as much as I can. She then waits in line with the other kids, patiently. Then gives the tickets to the guy at the gate, he even got a smile from her today. She gets to pick out her horse and we ride. We do this two times in a row. Then she gets a toy out of the quarter machines, well today they changed all the toys. I was freaked, as any mom with a kiddo on the spectrum would be but she surprised me. She just looked at all the toys, made me describe them all as she pointed to each little toy, then decided she didn’t want any and took my hand and we skipped back to the car. From an outsider this might not seem like much but it’s HUGE. My mama heart is so happy. Consistency is key and it’s moments like these I am in awe of how much she’s progressing. 💞 #autismawareness #autismmom #consistency #progressnotperfection
