I am at a loss of words, her passing feels like a deep personal loss too.
Today ironically is the wedding anniversary of my late parents Colonel and Dr Meeta jaitly. My father was a 20 year old Lieutenant in the army when he got critically wounded in 1971 war. He saw my mother in the army hospital and sent her the song “Kora Kagaz Tha Ye Mun Mera” from Aradhana sung by Lata Mangeshkar ji and Kishore Kumar as a love letter as he couldn’t write due to his injuries. Her songs became the first love letters of my parents coming together.
No words or awards in this world qualify to truly honour the Lataji and her legacy. Her songs were the background score not only of our industry since 1942 but the background score of the life journey of millions of hearts through generations of agonies and ecstasies, love & tragedy, war and peace. After 92 years of pacifying us with her magical voice the nightingale left for her heavenly abode, leaving us with a treasure trove of magic to soothe our souls. It is indeed a great loss for our nation and our Indian film industry.

On the 21st Anniversary of “Miss India Universe 2001” I want to introduce you all to PROBIR DA.
Motherhood is an energy, it manifests in any form, meet my 2nd mother, my guide & the person who made Miss India happen for me.
It’s hard to imagine what my life would have been like without him & his love.Through my struggling years he warmed me like a mama Kangaroo even though he himself battled Homophobia, ageing & a traumatic personal life. I treasure memories of the time he explained homophobia to me in Bengali, he whispered when he spoke as he was unconsciously afraid someone might overhear him, because it was so taboo,he could never make peace with himself. He never allowed himself to have a genuine love. While he was fighting his own battles he held my hand, empowered me with knowledge about the field I found myself in. He helped me cope with instances of sexual harassment & viciousness of people I was compelled to work with.
It was he who insisted I apply for Ms India & made me meet @jeenamitrabanik who was then the regional editor of Femina. She guided us & he did everything in his power to motivate me. I remember him packing a small makeup pouch,my swimsuit in his humble bag when I got selected for Miss India eastern zone trials. We both took a taxi to Taj Bengal, he said he will finish a shoot return to pick me up post the trials. I will never forget his words as the ambassador taxi drove away:
“When I return your destiny would have changed, don’t forget your Bengali Ma!”
I wanted him to move to Mumbai to head my personal makeup team & start his own studio but he would always say the same thing to me : “My life is here in Kolkata God gave me a mission to care for you, that i did. All I want is to see you married one day”
He never got to do my make up on my wedding as he desired as he passed away tragically in 2005.
He is also one of the biggest reasons I became an #lgbtqia rights activist. Our many million conversations, the love that we shared, inspired me to fight for change so that the next Probir Da does not die heartbroken because of his orientation.

“TRAUNSEE” this lake is our very own Austrian version of the Lochness. According to our local legend a Waterhorse lives in the lake. Records mention a mermaid riding on the back of a creature who lives in the waters. Locals refer to it as “Lungy” and photographs have been taken of the creature. I always find great peace on the banks of this lake. Anything that boasts of legendary fairy creatures specifically in your own backyard is like playing an important character in your own fairytale.

Wasim Kapoor ( 3 Jan 1951- 24th Jan 2022 )
Yesterday, a part of my childhood left for his heavenly abode. For people and the art world he was eminent painter Wasim Kapoor for me he was ”Tutu Chacha”. I met him the first time when I was 15 years old in Kolkata and he said “Aap toh Ms India, Ms Universe banegi.. dekhiyega”.
My impressionable years were massively impacted by his art, his wisdom and his guidance during my struggling days as a model. His home was also my second surrogate home as I lived alone in kolkata and every time I was sick or needed guidance I would find comfort with him and his family as my local guardians.
Tutu chacha was always smiling even though his heart held deep pain and sorrow. Besides his beautiful paintings his signature black ensemble signified the darkness he felt within. He was a remarkable polio survivor from early childhood. I remember he wore his Caliper shoes for polio like a super hero with a special weapon. He had to use a crutch as management techniques for treating polio in the past ranged from detrimental, to no effect, and he suffered numerous consequences of failed surgeries as a child. It is said that as a child he spent numerous years in a cast and his affinity for art developed by drawing on the very cast that bound his childhood.
I am truly grateful for all the ways in which he touched my life. His loss is an immense loss to all those whom he loved, inspired. Above all India has lost a great artist and revolutionary treasure of wisdom.
Rest in peace Tutu Chacha.
“Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Rajioon — Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return”.

I truly wish all children had access to clean water, to drink “and” to play. We loose 2000 children EVERYDAY due to lack of access to clean water. So many people and children do not have clean water that itself is a crime against humanity.
We can all contribute by keeping water sources nearest to us clean. It’s my biggest joy to see my boys enjoy nature in all its glory and my biggest wish that all children in the world have the right to enjoy their birthright to a clean and green nature, specifically water.
