‘What’s your legacy?’ is a daunting question. But, at just 36, actress #DeepikaPadukone, has been thinking about it a lot lately. “You reach a stage in your life where you wake up thinking, what is it that I want to be remembered for?,” the #Bollywood star told us in her April cover interview.
The answer — in addition to her #mentalhealth foundation and impressive acting credits — is a lifestyle brand. “I think that focusing on the importance of #mentalhealth is my calling,” said our April cover star, #DeepikaPadukone. In 2015, the #Bollywood actor made headlines after sharing her struggle with #depression. As Padukone reports, in India, there’s still considerable stigma around discussing mental health, which prompted her to speak out.
With box office hits, a flourishing relationship (with now-husband @ranveersingh), and lucrative ad campaigns, it would have seemed to any outsider that Padukone was on top of the world. But, she didn’t feel that way, grappling with her depression in silence until her mother intervened. “I struggled and I suffered for many months because I didn’t know anyone who had been through something like this,” she said. “I felt if I shared my experience and even just one person was like, ‘I identify with these symptoms,’ then my purpose would be served.” Enter the Live Love Laugh Foundation.
In 2015, Padukone established @tlllfoundation to keep the conversation going and to provide resources for those who are suffering. “It’s work that I will continue to do. And hopefully the foundation will survive even beyond me,” said Padukone.
