The Wauja or Waurá are speakers of an Arawak language and live in four different villages within the Xingu Indigenous Land in Mato Grosso, Brazil. They are recognized, even among other indigenous peoples from the Xingu, as the guardians of stunning artistic designs as in the graphic art used in their basketry, in ceramic painting, feather ornaments and ritual masks. They are also recognized for their Shamanism. They have a complex and fascinating cosmology, in which the bonds between animals, landmarks, humans and extra-human beings permeate their conception of the world. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Elewoká Wauja is considered one of the greatest Huka-huka fighters (of the Xingu traditional wrestling) of his generation. This gave him the right to create his own village, the beautiful and peaceful Ulupuene, about 10 years ago. Today, 120 people live at Ulupuene under his leadership. With his wife, Kaapi Wauja, they are recognized Yakapá shamans, highly sought after by all the ethnic groups in the region. Yakapá literally means “one who runs semiconscious” to rescue souls. This ability is related to their vision quest (divination and identification of diseases) as well as to their human and/or extra-human capacity to deal with illness-causing agents and to the relationships they have with the Apapaatai ​​spirits which help them in the healing process. 🍃⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
