Is Deaf a bad word? Googling up the definition of Deaf was shocking… most of their definitions are negative, misleading, and far from the truth. Are all deaf people unreasonable? Unyielding? Unwilling to listen? Refusing to be persuaded?
Words have power and by defining them incorrectly takes Deaf people’s power away. I refuse to listen to this. What should the new definition be?
Why is it called Baby sign language? When you teach babies or even children, do you call it Baby English? Baby Spanish? Baby Cantonese? Nope! Let’s change how we talk about baby sign language by using sign language (American Sign Language, Japanese Sign Language, etc).

Entering the new year, here are five ways to make it better for Deaf people:
1. Anything deaf-related, listen to Deaf people. Not hearing interpreters, family members, and so on…
2. Put captions on everything!
3. Learn sign language (PS: don’t use it as clout)
4. Ask for their communication & accessibility preferences.
5. Treat Deaf people like humans. In other words, they’re more than just Deaf. Get to know them deeply.
And…not one size fits all as all Deaf people are not the exact same. And each one comes with a set of their own needs and wants. Honor them in every way possible. Thank you!

My dad and Grammy discovered several years ago that they’re of Jewish ancestry. My dad also has vitiligo which I could possibly get one day. My Deaf parents didn’t think they would have a Deaf baby until me… There was and is no other way I could have been made. I’m wholly and uniquely beautiful. They are not defects at all. They are not something to be fixed. I am unapologetically me. 🤟✨ Austin, Texas
