Beyond thankful for the ride it’s been leading up to, during and after my UFC career. From my first MMA class at the tender age of 20 (and no previous experience other than the not so mean streets of Mississauga #MDV all day), to fighting my way through a reality show, with 15 other like minded knuckle heads of which I would win to earn a contract with the UFC. The traveling, the training, the fighting all over the world. It’s truly been surreal. Now, with more than a decade of professional fighting to fight for something even bigger than myself. Change. It’s taken some time, but now with wins under my cannabis athlete belt, there’s still plenty of fight left in me! I’ve taken a few risks before and it’s paid off more than I could have ever imagined. History was made on this day. 💪🔥 – One year after becoming the first sanctioned cannabis athlete in pro sports there is still so much to soak in beating not only my opponent in the ring but out… end prohibition – First off, with a once in a century pandemic in full-effect, it’s needless to say there were many delays. All sports, especially contact sports were postponed indefinitely. It took months crafting a “get back to sports” protocols to allow us to not only make history, but bring back athletics to Canada all together after covid shut everything down. Can’t thank Erik & @risefighting enough for all the hard work, they helped bring back sports for all athletes in Canada as a blueprint to do so safety. The endless bureaucracy was quite the uphill challenge… – Then came the event, and what an event it was! Couldn’t be more proud partnering with Sabah @risefighting to make it all happen. The venue was amazing @songheesevents along with all the great sponsors that not only helped support but took a chance in such uncertain times. They were the true MVPs whom made this dream into a reality – it’s the truest honour to have walked out into battle with them in my corner and events as well. – Lastly. The fight. After 5 years of struggling to have my medicine recognized as such, it’s just surreal to think back after all the ups and downs, the the endless self-doubts if I was was going down the right path… Potentially risking my career for what I believed it. Knocking out prohibition one fight at a time. – Beyond excited to see the Colorado athletic commission is looking to potentially remove cannabis all together from their “prohibited substance list” the year after I was granted a therapeutic use exemption recognizing it as MEDICINE 🌿 – With the help of my console @erikmagraken we argued not only did I sufficiently show cannabis was the best medicine to deal with my condition of bi-lateral neuropathy. Along with the half dozen doctors providing the paper work to prove it, all while other first line medications like opioids, painkillers and anti-depressants were a detriment to me as both patient AND athlete. They agreed. #precedent ! – In addition, @erikmagraken and I argued the current standard of test was inaccurate for a variety of reasons: everybody & body is different, so tests via fat soluble markers have different results per weight & even gender which can make it difficult to have a real standard. Cannabis should be treated no different as any other medicine as it’s effects wear off within hours, not days like actual “performance enhancing” substances it was lumped into. The important thing is not being impaired when you fight. Just like how they check with alcohol & other meds. They agreed. – Now it looks like they’ve taken my case study & are looking to possibly make it retroactive for ALL athletes moving forward in Colorado. Couldn’t be more humbled and thrilled that the fruits of my 6 year fight are coming true.
