For far too long I have pushed away my femininity and the woman inside me. Because I’m non-binary, patriarchy made me believe I could not be both, and I had to push away all the ‘woman’ I was, to become the man I wanted to be. I’ve loved all the beautiful, powerful and vulnerable things in the woman next to me, but hated it about myself. And now, I want to apologize to myself. For believing this restrictive version of what femininity looks like. It is my biggest ally, my greatest force and a crucial part of ‘me’ that I’ve finally learned to love. I see that now. My womanhood is only, and solely, defined by me and what I want it to be. Belgium alone spent more than 3500 million euros in 2021. “In a racist society it is not enough to be non-racist. We need to be anti-racist.” Much of what is wrong in the world is built on white supremacy, racism and discrimination. Climate change is inherently racist. People of color around the globe are facing the hardest consequences of the climate crisis while they are generally least responsible. It’s the Western system based on white supremacy that has caused the overexploitation of natural resources and humans on this planet, responsible for over 90% of excess global emissions. To change this we need to acknowledge what climate justice really means. centering the voices of indigenous people and people of color as they are pioneering in the fight against climate change. We need to acknowledge the racial violence of climate change and how institutionalized racism is one of the roots of the system that is burning the planet. Inaction is not an option. Because we live in a system where rich nations are responsible for 92% of global emissions and taking 0% responsibility. I’m often asked in interviews what I do to reduce my own carbon footprint 🌎 Commitments such as not flying, not eating meat, refusing to buy fast fashion, are all important individual choices in our daily lives which we can make. But here’s the thing.
