Nothing too good for @Stephenathome Leslie and Sarah, in the works very early Emmy morning… Given the chance to work in an Amanda Peet created project, to work with Sandra Oh and Bob Balaban, Nana Mensah and (major crush) Jay Duplass~in a show about the modern academic world- To play a distinguished professor at the end of the line, a woman with no f*cks left to give … who could resist that? Not I! Tho’ this meant we would all spend the winter in Pittsburgh, during the worst months of the pandemic. We all huddled together and were lifted out of reality’s gloom in the joy of telling this rich story, daily feeling the transformation doing a creative deed with a common purpose brings. I will never think of all these people again without remembering that elevation is always in reach…if you reach. I posted this about an hour ago, with a long text… I had started to write something very short- but it led me hither and yon, and before I knew it, I’d been pecking away on the phone well over an hour. Finally I proofed it, very laborious for me, I am so clumsy writing that way- and I hit share, and put the phone down and had to eat, I was starving! So I came back to check— and … there’s no text! I can’t think what to make of it, and I feel sad and somehow chastised. Well, my mother was kind of private … so there’s that. But. Shrine, of sorts. Spartan breakfast on my favorite souvenir plate. #LifeIsShort Virginia Davis Taylor Happy Birthday~ You were a wonderful, mindful, glamorous, creative, witty, and curious person, full of private musings, which played across your face like the merest shadows of pale clouds. I could have known you better. As it is, I know you well enough to have you visit my mind and heart every day… certainly when I hear a great joke, or see something really beautiful that makes me want to see your face when you saw it. We shared a lot of mutual enjoyment, and truly, what more is there? Your other children, Pat and Pam, both emailed this morning about another picture of you well all loved~ a happy moment when you glowed with delight. Wish you could see ANN. she would lift you even higher! And you’d see you inspired me to create something, as you did all your life. You are missed, and loved still. Your third and (forever youngest) daughter, Holland Hillary arranged the whole night. Having seen it in DC, she knew. They brought Meryl and Don. Meryl told me, he kept saying, this is all so true to her, so accurate. “He just roared at the Arkansas joke…” They were so interested in the process. I didn’t know they were coming, as Kevin really protects me from distraction. He greeted me as I stepped off the stage and said, “Don’t kick your shoes off, you’re coming with me,” and swept me into the back corridors of Lincoln Center until we finally arrived at a door opening into large reception room with the Clintons, Gabby Giffords, Mark Kelly and… MERYL STREEP! I was speechless, but not for long. The President was still teary-eyed and Hillary just beamed at the surprise event she had made. Meryl seemed genuinely excited and told me how the President kept nudging her and saying. “This is so accurate!” and guffawed at the Arkansas joke. I was so thrilled to talk with them all as they seemed avidly interested in the whole process of making the show. It was wonderful to look into Gabby Giffords’s eyes and see the sparkling perfect presence there, and to meet astronaut Mark Kelly, whom I now support politically, of course. These pictures were all snapped on my phone by my dresser Barry Doss, but they had the great photog Brigitte Lacombe at that event for official coverage, so I sometimes see her shots still out there. What a night. The reception was long, and as Kevin led me out, he said, ”You have a few more people here…” and lo and behold, all the Kennedy Center ushers awaited in their own reception area! What an unbelievable night!!! And yep, of course, I had a matinée the next morning… Hillary arranged the whole night. Having seen it in DC, she knew. They brought Meryl and Don. Here seen backstage at @zachtheatre in Austin with his bride April Kimble. Lyle modestly thought that we played his “She makes Me Feel Good” as the second act began as a nod to him in the audience!! No, Lyle, your music is hard wired permanently into our production of ANN. That song’s one of Ann’s favorites. What, when, where. Just the facts, Ma’am. Remembering ANN’s wildfire run of at the Kenney Center~ we had this dazzling visitor backstage! She thrilled all of us with her approval and delight. Washington was our last stop before Broadway (after Galveston, San Antonio, Austin, and Chicago.) ANN was a joyful experience in Washington, and non-partisan, for a change, in that city! Governor Richards brought out the best in people, crowds, audiences, and one-on-one. Hillary Clinton and Bill Clinton had real friendships with her since earliest days. When ANN played Lincoln Center, the following season, Hillary would bring Bill along with her to see it again… What more imprimatur could the play get! I’m seeing this picture all over … it’s from ANN’s Opening Night, when Covid regulations led me to joyfully greet the patrons and friends after the show from the Courtyard balcony above. Is there someone with me, ever so kindly, in this view..? @PasadenaPlayhouse #ANN #visitation I loved this moment from a student matinee at Lincoln Center’s production of ANN. Along with a scattering of high school teachers, there were over a thousand kids from maybe 14 up, and they were, of course, SO different in response from the sophisticated NY audience I had gotten used to. Most had never been to a Broadway show, or even a play at all~ except school stuff. There were things they couldn’t be expected to get… but their silence was unnerving. When the Governor’s office entered from way upstage and rolled forward 35 feet (only at Lincoln Center!) there was one awe stricken ” wow.” But oh , my~ when the show ended, they all went WOW, figuratively speaking, and magically, ANN had had a similar effect to what the woman herself had with people young and old, city or country, brilliant or garden variety… she was someone real… she saw you. She heard you. She cared what you thought. She was profoundly fair. She had plenty of flaws and was supremely lovable. This young man made ME feel like the play had touched his life in a way that opened his heart~ as he did mine in this moment. So thrilled to see ANN’s new billboard in my old West Hollywood nabe, atop the fine old building that houses Revolver, a popular bar right across the street from Flaming Saddles. Governor #Desantis should see this play about another Governor for possible enlightenment. The play does actually have the word ‘gay’ in it, but don’t worry- it only occurs once. Governor Richards was profoundly fair minded and her government appointments were built on a foundation of inclusion. She is admired to this day- even more beloved in memory. We didn’t know how good we had it. @PasadenaPlayhouse #AnnRichards The Kennedy Center Ushers for the Eisenhower Theatre, specifically the Thursday night gang, were a wonderful group who responded so incredibly to ANN during our previews there, speaking their mind to my director Ben Klein, that I became determined to continue to hear from them. The ushers generally had no access to the innards of the artist’s side of the theatre or the fabled Green room, which was a huge chandelier and couch filled haven where the great and garden variety folks came after the performance. I pled the case with KC management that, since I was the only performer, I felt they should allow the ushers to visit after the show along with other friends if I wanted that. So, permission was granted, and for the first time, the “Redcoats,” as I called them, started appearing after the show — three one night, eight another — during the month ANN played there. Our last Saturday night happened to be my birthday, and the gang just floored me by arranging on their own for champagne and a birthday cake to celebrate, and ALL of them (a big group of about 30), it seemed, in attendance. I never will forget it. But nothing prepared me for the night on Broadway, more than a year later, when about 35 of them appeared IN THEIR Kennedy Center REDCOATS at a performance of “their” ANN at Lincoln Center. They had come up to NYC in a caravan of buses, trains, cars, and airplanes. They made an adventure of it and I consider it the greatest honor I’ve ever been given. They were rewarded, too, in a way — at the performance they attended were also President Bill Clinton and First Lady Hillary Clinton, Meryl Streep, Gabby Giffords, and Mark Kelly. Quite a night! This is the first ANN set, for the premiere at the Grand 1894 Opera House in Galveston, Texas, in May, 2010. It was designed by Michael Fagin. I hired him based on pictures I saw of gorgeous sets he had done for Light in the Piazza, for the Philadelphia Theatre Company. Took a chance and boy, was I right. He has designed and supervised set installation of every run of ANN in eight theatres, including the old Shubert in Chicago, the Kennedy Center in DC, the Vivian Beaumont at New York’s Lincoln Center. Lighting in this shot is by designer Matthew Richards. I love being in this world. Oh, no… I posted a screenshot because I’m so dumb about reposting…but in insta framing, it cut off the artist’s handle! Which is @sezi_s !!! Wonderful sketches and paintings/ A button from back in the day… Pinning it on now. As John Lewis said, “Democracy isn’t a state. Barbara Jordan and Henry Cisneros announce their endorsement of the candidacy of Secy. of the Treasury Ann Richards, for Governor of Texas. Magisterial Barbara Jordan, in this one case, departed from her usual position of staying well out of politics and not endorsing any candidate. Her feelings about Ann Richards as a leader were very strong, and they became close friends. Barbara was the Chair of Ann’s campaign, and would then serve the governor as her ethics advisor, often giving seminars on ethics within the administration. (This marvelous photograph was taken by Ave Bonar, who was Ann’s official photographer. She also served in that role for the history of the play ANN, and its journey through Texas, Chicago, Washington, D.C., Broadway, and back home to Austin.)
