Yes this is me as well! I never post videos of me doing any random fun dancing – I only ever share Bharatanatyam videos and sometimes a little classical based movement to a few film songs. The truth is that I like all dance. I might not be as good or as skilled with other types of dance but I’m a true dance junkie …. I’ll try any kind of movement form … and all of it excites me.
Bharatanatyam is a kin to my inner being, my first language. I respect, revere and will continue to try to be better everyday. But that doesn’t mean I don’t like or enjoy other movement forms….
I’m not really doing anything here… just messing around before I changed…. But have a joyous weekend everyone! And hope you find some time to let loose !!! ❤️❤️❤️
First time @vivianambrose has seen me like this in a saree 😂🤣😂

Just dancing around while shooting for @theraadhakalpamethod online program 😊
Took a break and improvised to this. These dance reels that you see are usually never choreographed. I play the music and dance… that’s about it 😊
So I have no idea what I’ve danced once it’s done.

Loving this song! I danced to the Telugu version of this song but couldn’t find it on reels…. But this has the same meaning I think 😊

Day 31 #100daysofinnergrowth
I find that it’s very important to pause and reassess where I’m going … what I’m doing … constantly. We are humans … I’m allowed to change my perspective about something. This openness to change allows me to consider others opinions/ thoughts/ perceptions. After consideration, I may finally choose to stick to my own idea, but the fact that I allow this option of change makes a big difference.
I might have been more single pointed with my ideas of dance… but now I find myself being able to appreciate a lot more because of being more open to different thought processes.
This is not just with respect to dance – it’s with respect to life at large…. And these small things make a big difference to how we see the world …

Day 28: #100daysofinnergrowth I know it’s been a bit since I posted about this, but the truth is that when I’m working through things it feels dishonest to post something that im unable to do myself. The past two weeks, I’ve tried to keep my basic things straight … the quiet tea time, the silent yoga/ walk, etc
I also did this the past week… when I felt emotionally overwhelmed with something, I didn’t respond immediately to the situation. I left it for a day, went on a walk, found something that would change my mood and then tried to respond. I never used to do this before and would often react quickly to situations.
But I realise that when I give it some time, I’m able to do a few things
– respond in a much calmer manner
– gain perspective
– not make the situation worse
This is definitely not a 100 day endeavour. Seems like it’s going to take much much longer … 😊❤️

Day 30: #100daysofinnergrowth
As a dancer/ artist things don’t necessarily go as planned. There are a lot of variables on a daily basis. We are at the mercy of organisers, audiences, weather, curators etc etc it is not like a regular job where we show up and do the work. We maybe willing to work, and there maybe nothing to do – Nobody would have invited us to perform. There maybe work, and we may have fallen ill – sprained an ankle, caught a fever….
I used to be very upset when I was taken away from dance when I was younger. I’d be upset with myself, irritable when a planned rehearsal/ show/ training session didn’t happen. But now, I realise this annoyance is pointless. It does nothing really… I’ve begun to be able to accept variables and embrace them with a lot more grace and humility than before. This has offered me a distance from dance that makes me respect it even more. I find myself a lot calmer and am able to take clearer decisions with respect to everything.
Smiling because I had to make some decisions and everything is just fine!!

Day 29 #100daysofinnergrowth
Whenever I take the time to notice the small details of my surroundings, it reminds me of the beauty that I’m surrounded by.
I’m not talking about things that we normally consider “beautiful” – sunsets and flowers. Yes perhaps those too, but also parts of our world that we never stop to consider. A trail of ants, the way a fabric falls, the nerves in my own body, the way wood remains for centuries, the mysteries of electronics…. The list is never ending.
If I think and truly consider these things…. Notice everything around me, it helps me slow down. I also realise that this inherent beauty in the world that surrounds me …. Is something one cannot explain…
Going to try to find moments to do this today… 😊
I wrote about this in my book “Finding Shiva”
A poem from my book is in the second picture….

Happy birthday to the best coach ever! @somyarout2806
Today was my day to try to get him to do some partnering… and after several failed attempts 🤣😂🤣 and many laughs… we have something to show!
My Bharatanatyam dance teachers passed away when I was about 21 years old. I’ve been pretty much on my own since then. Learning and training …
I’ve had some wonderful teachers of contemporary/ modern dance/ ballet at the conservatory, and once I was back in india after that, it’s been a long solo journey. Although I’ve always had guidance from different sources, I haven’t really had a consistent eye viewing my physical progress for a very long time.
To have someone who watches and pushes you is invaluable! And I’m thankful to have Somya ❤️ every sportsperson, everyone who moves for a profession… needs this. A coach!

Happy to be back in the studio… dancing, practising! Lots to come this year….

Yashoda and krishna embody the special relationship between every mother and child… and I can never get tired of dancing many interpretations and versions of this love ….
Loving this song in all the languages ❤️ sharing another bit… since reels only allows 60 secs I couldn’t share the rest of it earlier and I like this vertical format of watching it … 🤪

I felt so free …. and danced my heart out with @d.v.prasanna @nandakumar_unnikrishnan @mahesha swamy and @samagaharsha . @nishrigo was on the lights … and I’m so thankful to be able to dance to live audiences again.
Look forward to many more this year!!

A woman’s body is projected as an object of desire repeatedly through centuries by societies. The image of a submissive, helpless woman is repeated through history, across cultures. It is an image that is used to sell commercial merchandise repeatedly.
“My full lips, my youth… is it my fault? My breasts, my body… objects of desire… my fault again?”
Most abuse happens when girls are too young to realise what’s going on; Too young to stand up for themselves ….
They become the targets of abuse when they don’t have voices of their own yet and the abuser’s prey on their vulnerability.
Many abused women wonder if it was their fault… wonder if they did something wrong… if they had dressed differently, walked differently, spoken differently… would they have been able to change things?
This piece draws on many stories of abuse and retribution and how we perceive abuse as a society.

How many times have we not been party to a judgemental comment. “Look at the way she walks… talks… what is she wearing?” Etc etc
Often an abuse victim is not believed … and judgements are placed on her/him without too much thought.

A slightly longer version of Sri Ramachandra Kripalu bhajamana.
On Ram Navami, our family tradition is to distribute panakam (it’s like lemon juice) and Kosambri (cucumber salad) to passers by. My mother always ensures that we do this even today. It’s nice to see people stopping and accepting our gesture in the summer heat.
I however realise that this simple sense of community is disappearing in big cities today. When we were children, during Ganesh Chaturthi I remember going to strangers houses down the street uninvited…but this would be unthinkable today.
I’m not sure what has changed in our lifestyle … but something intangible certainly has changed. It’s just something I was thinking about….
Anyway, hope you all had a lovely weekend!
This audio is not replaced … so it’s a little noisy. But the music is beautiful. By @jayashriramnath
