My grandfather was a Gardner by profession and instilled in me an appreciation for thoughtfully arranged yards. Across Ukraine I’ve seen beautifully cultivated beds of tulips, daffodils and forsythia. In far too many villages along the front, the owners are gone. I don’t know if they fled or are dead, but their gardens remain, blooming brightly under a shadow of war with no one to appreciate their glory
Introducing writer/director Rashad Frett, the first recipient of my newly-established grant with @nyutisch. This grant has been created to support historically underrepresented voices and to promote BIPOC stories in the film industry. In addition to receiving funding for his film, Frett will serve as a mentor to a high school student from the Tisch Future Artists Program – a FREE high school arts workshop program offered each spring to first years, sophomores, and juniors in the NYC area – and have them observe the filmmaking process beside him. Being able to give young artists the support I wish I had myself growing up in the East Bay is a priority close to my heart. There is always more work to be done but I hope that this two-pronged program will be one more potential path for the next generation of filmmakers who come from backgrounds who can’t always see a clear way to achieve their dreams

Valentina (Melitopol), Vera (Chernihiv), Oksana (Kharkiv) at shelter in Lviv. Valentina came to western Ukraine to celebrate the 35th anniversary of her marriage. Her children gave her and her husband a trip to the Carpathian Mountains, which she had long dreamed of visiting. They spent a wonderful weekend there and were on their way back to the train station when they were told that war had broken out. Now her children and grandchildren have left Ukraine, but the men of the family cannot leave. She stays with them in Lviv, “because who else will take care of them. They are helpless, they are men,” she smiles. Oksana was forced to flee Kharkiv, which has been under constant shelling since the first day of the war. She did not want to abandon her family and husband, but she had to do it to save her child. “We were just raising our grandchildren. Now we are here. We didn’t ask for this. We did not ask to be ‘liberated’”
