A few of my favorite Halloween costumes over the last couple of years. I was so obsessed with my Cruella De Vil costume that I literally wore it all week wherever I went. And I equally loved when I was Sally from “Nightmare Before Christmas”. Except right after we shot that show, I had to get on a plane to fly to NYC to interview Barbara Walters and getting that blue paint off of my face and body was not easy. Happy heavenly birthday to the greatest man I have ever known. I love you baba and I miss you every single day. I talk to you often and I know you can hear me… I just wish I could hear your voice back. That loud boisterous larger than life voice that I used to be embarrassed of as a teenager. I’d say, “Baba please stop being so loud in public places..it’s so embarrassing.” And you would immediately and purposefully get louder and say in your thick Greek accent, “I don’t care what anyone think. I’m Greek damnit. This is how we talk. They don’t like it. I don’t care.” Although in those moments I was mortified…the lessons that you taught me (intentional or unintentional) will last a lifetime. It was in those moments that I learned that it doesn’t really matter too much what the people who don’t know you think of you. What only truly matters is what “your people” think of you. And by “your people” I mean your family and friends and your loved ones and those who are close to you and know who you really are. Your tribe!! Those are the only opinions that truly matter. It was also those moments that taught me to rarely ever be embarrassed of anything. Which in turn, also taught me to be brave. I could write a book on the lessons you taught me baba. They seemed so simple at the time but as I’ve grown up I understand just how profound they were. I wish you were still here to teach me more!!! That is one of my very favorite pictures of him. You can see the sparkle in his eyes. You can see his goodness and his love for life and his love for everyone around him. There are a lot of great things about living in Southern California but one of my favorite things would have to be having access to the freshest and most delicious citrus I have ever had in my life. I am lucky enough to have a lot of citrus trees in my backyard that produce the sweetest oranges, tangerines, mandarins and grapefruits. Not to mention the lime and lemon trees which are great for making homemade lemonade and limeade. Because we have such an abundance of fruit, I like to try and use it in as many recipes as I can and what I can’t use I give to friends and neighbors. So, Alexandra wanted to make a cake this past weekend and instead of making my traditional Lemon Olive Oil cake from my cookbook and which is also featured on my new website iamdebbiem.com I decided to make it an ORANGE Olive Oil cake and WOW…was it a crowd pleaser! I shoulda made two!!! I baked it in this cute heart shaped baking pan I got from @target in honor of Valentines Day which is right around the corner. I have shared a lot about myself on television over the last few decades, but one story I have never shared is how I actually landed the job on @theviewabc 25 years ago. Somehow @paolopresta did an incredible amount of research and recon and knew the story!!!??? So, he asked me to recount it during our amazingly honest and open and fun conversation the other day. I started getting hives reliving the stress of it all as I was telling it 🤪. It’s funny how remembering certain events in your life can put you right back in the middle of ‘em. This story seems like it’s straight outta some sort of “Hollywood Legend Has It” type of book. However, this is no legend. This is exactly how it happened. I can hardly believe it myself still to this day!!!😜 This snippet of our interview just scratches the surface of everything Paolo and I discussed. We talked everything from love, loss, childhood, being an immigrant kid, career, @ikariabeauty and everything in between. I felt like Paolo may have also studied my former boss Barbara Walters before this interview…. Because Barbara was famous for making people cry….
