@paaprikastore works diligently at highlighting heirloom crafts from regions around India and marrying them with wearable, sustainable fabrics, like this authentic (there’s a lot of let’s say ‘dilution’ of traditional Kalamkari techniques in the market) natural Kalamkari saree with a gorgeous Pallu – depiction of a woman and bird deep in conversation. This sari was handmade by artisans in Sri Kalahasthi, Andhra Pradesh.
Natural Kalamkari involves 23 steps (that’s right TWENTY THREE!) of cleaning, drying, bleaching, starching, hand painting and more. I think of the process of transmission and the artisan’s hands, the same hands that finally immerse the Kalamkari fabric in the Swarnmukhi river which bestows the fabric – initiation like – with a unique red hue that no other river water offers.
I’m honoured to wear this gorgeous creation that embodies a pure dedication to India’s craft.

The Pilates plot continues with these movement archives. Every session is different, an inaugural feeling, sometimes a stiffness that takes an hour to release, a cramp or a delicious release, a long neglected muscle that makes its presence known, like a toddler bursting into the room.
I don’t know if Pilates can be described as a becoming and unbecoming but I know we have been conditioned to hate parts of ourself (short torso, Eastern European thighs) and I don’t know if it has to do with the fading retrograde, but with each class there’s more appreciation for all my bits. Flawed and precious. Thank you body.

Clearly, the Song of the Good Red Earth was born buried in me, like a secret sorrow. And furthermore cheering on crashing monkeys from this particular verandah cannot be underestimated for delivering a shivers of delight.
But back to the red earth and how it owns me. ‘Can you see’ the land says, ‘there comes a time when you have seen too much?’
