🚨 Impeach The Precedent – re:mancipation Workshop Week, April 11-14, 2022
Participant Profile: Sanford Biggers. The award-winning, multidisciplinary artist, professor and scholar is co-founder of re:mancipation – a collaborative project with the Chazen Museum of Art (University of Wisconsin-Madison) @chazenartuw and MASK Consortium.
The re:mancipation project will engage with a sculpture in the museum collection, “Emancipation Group,” by American sculptor Thomas Ball, which depicts Abraham Lincoln standing over a kneeling freed man. Using the sculpture as its central focus, re:mancipation will seek to explore, dissect, and better understand racism in America.
Follow @remancipationproject to stay connected.

👁 Nile, 2022 featured in
‘The Extinction Agenda’ @massimodecarlogallery (closed on 6/4/22)
The body is based off of a French sculpture from the 1800s that was called La Seine. The figure is based off of a river god. And the river god is an archetype that you see in a lot of Greco-Roman history as well as other cultures, representing, you know, the force and strength and power and mystery of rivers. And I’ve been fascinated with that motif so some of those figures are in this particular show. I was playing with the names and of course La Seine represents the river in France and in this case, I renamed it Nile because of the presence of another hybridized African mask that’s on top of the figure. Nile is made out of ‘Rosso Cardinale’ marble, and one of the things that really draws me to it is the very beautiful hue, that sort of reddish pinkish clayish type of colour and the very distinctive veining that goes through it almost like a river itself.

Last weekend ‘Just Us’ was featured in EXPO CHICAGO’s OVERRIDE | A Billboard Project – a citywide public art initiative in collaboration with the City of Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE.)
Placing artwork within this public context and the broader presentation of billboard advertising, OVERRIDE takes its name from industry terminology referring to the continuation of an outdoor advertising program beyond a contracted period. Fully integrated into the language of advertising and local familiar signage, each of the works included within the OVERRIDE program present the opportunity for local and international artists to intercept and push the boundaries of how visual culture is disseminated in our increasingly image-based environment.
This project is made possible by a collaboration with the Chicago Digital Network to exhibit artwork on all CDN billboards and “CIPs” in the Central Business District of Chicago. @expochicago @chicagodcase @moniquemeloche #publicart #sanfordbiggers #chicagoart
