Wesley Chan Instagram – Afterburners Fueled by Nostalgia — It’s been 1 week since I watched the Top Gun sequel, and almost 30 years since I watched the original as a kid.
Actually it might’ve been the first movie I saw in a theater. Either that or Roger Rabbit. Both arguably inappropro for a smol child at the time 🥺 🤷🏻♂️ While I don’t talk about this film as much as Star Wars and Back to the Future, Top Gun absolutely shaped my childhood in the same significant way.
I remember running around the elementary school playground with my arms out pretending to be Maverick’s F-14 Tomcat. I remember watching and rewatching the dogfight scenes (and skipping the boring sexy time scenes) on the VHS tape. Then in high school, I remember listening to Harold Faltermeyer’s intro track (and Danger Zone of course) before all my xcountry and track races.
Watching the new film was an experience just as exciting and memorable as the first. It made me want to bust out my favorite toy that I’ve managed to hold onto for 3 decades, and just be a kid again…
So I did.
