Posted @withregram • @idarandom45 🎬 From American Cinematographer (@american_cinematographer), July 1985: “To guarantee realism, production designer Ida Random hit the research books (150 of them), and the studio backlots. She designed and built 56 buildings and building fronts (pared down to 42) for the town of Silverado. They boasted interior textures of wood that was glazed, grained and aged. Floors were maintained at an even level to allow for smooth dolly movements, and overhead lighting was rigged. Some of the adobe structures she built turned into mud after rainstorms hit; houses fell as much as two inches into the ground on one side; snow had to be scraped off the ground by blow torches one day and recreated by special effects and gypsum, on another.” Samir Hachem

From Ida: “We built the city of Silverado in winter near Galisteo, New Mexico. It was one of the coldest there for years. They had a hard time gettting me out of the art department trailer to look at paint samples. When the painters were painting or aging the buildings, the paint would literally blow sideways. At one point I believe there were more than 100 craftsmen working on the town!” PHOTOS: Ida hoping for better weather on the main street of the Silverado set; same set in the rain; Ida’s crew in front of soon-to-be “Midnight Star;” actors, crew in front of the finished building; Kevin Costner poses with @amandawyss. 🎬
