Dealing with Asthma as a young swimmer, Amy went on to Win Six Olympic Gold Medals —all shining as brightly as her optimism. She went on to meet her amazing husband, settling into her life after the games before things changed drastically — A debilitating accident left Amy paralyzed from the waist down. When she finally left the hospital, Amy quickly understood a new world, that was not made for disabled folks. Her first year was the toughest… crying, screaming, anything to get thru it. The Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law just in 1990 by President George H.W. Bush, this landmark Civil-Rights Legislation would give access and opportunity for people with disabilities across community life —including employment. With the last amendments in 1991, Amy’s passion to work to fight for what she refers to as, “her people” and the equitable rights, not pity, for Americans with disabilities has kept her passions alive, thru her work to change ADA laws for better access and considerations for the disabled. She still competes in swim & she is always at the ready for life and its many unforeseen challenges to arrive.
