Michael Bearden Instagram - The things I remember most about my time with MJ over the years, are the things the cameras didn’t catch! ⠀ ⠀ One day, early on in the process, MJ and I were in a room trying to get a set list together. It was MJ, me, and his youngest son. ⠀ ⠀ BTW: MJ’s thought process on crafting a show was quite interesting and brilliant! (that’s a longer story for another time)⠀ ⠀ Somehow, (and I don’t remember how actually) he and I got into a conversation about grits! Lol 😆 I was like, “what you know about grits MJ?” He said, “Please! What YOU know about grits!?” And, off we go into this long tangent on grits! ⠀ ⠀ Somewhere in the middle of it, his son asked, “what’s grits?” ⠀ ⠀ MJ and I looked at each other and just started laughing! I don’t even have the words!⠀ ⠀ He literally just texted me a few weeks ago to let me know he was going to be in LA for awhile. ⠀ ⠀ I’ve met many people in the business over my long career. Not all had the kindness, the grace, the dignity, the reverence, compassion and empathy for the community and people that Michael had!⠀ ⠀ And, talent! Undeniable!! He had that in every way imaginable! I, like many, was a huge fan of The Wire’ and Michael was a big reason why. ⠀ ⠀ When I first met him, I was so honored to do so. And, I told him I was. He said to me, “Man, I’m such a big Fan of what you do!” And, then proceeded to run down my list of credits! 🤯 I was amazed he even know who I was. We became good friends after that. ⠀ ⠀ I’m just devastated! 😥 Literally gut punched! The unexpectedness of it all. 💔⠀ ⠀ I lost a friend. The world lost a talented warrior for justice, hope, peace and the uplift of humanity! We were all better to have lived on earth while Michael was here. Michael Bearden Instagram - As the years move on (13 now), the daily details fade. However, I’ll never forget some of the small moments. ⠀ ⠀ After a while, we didn’t even notice the cameras rolling. It was just rehearsals to us. ⠀ ⠀ I do remember this moment. It came from a conversation I had with MJ a few days before. I was telling him how much I enjoyed the song ‘Heartbreak Hotel’ by him and his brothers, and would he consider doing it for the show.⠀ ⠀ He said he liked the song too but, would only do it if he thought it would add “production value” (his favorite saying to me at that time) to the show. ⠀ ⠀ One day, I saw MJ sitting there with Kenny and just started jamming the song. Foot (drums) and Alex (bass) being the brilliant musicians they are, just jumped right in. ⠀ ⠀ MJ sat there bobbing his head and feeling it. After that, we decided to put it in the show. MJ saw the “production value” and that was it! Just like that, In the show it went. ⠀ ⠀ I’ll never forget my time with MJ! Michael Bearden Instagram - Well, well, well! 😱 Imagine my surprise when I found out today I received my second Emmy nomination as a Music Director. ⠀ ⠀ Imagine it was even more of a surprise when my boss was the one to break the news to me. I had no idea! Ive just been laser focused on my work!⠀ ⠀ THANK YOU to ALL the Emmy voters for this amazing honor. I’m humbled. And, grateful! 🙏🏾⠀ ⠀ BIG Thank you to the legendary Tony Bennett, and my girl Gaga for letting me lead them both on what was a truly historic and magical evening. ⠀ ⠀ The little boy I was (from the Southside of Chicago) is very happy he pursed his life long love of Music. Michael Bearden Instagram - As a young boy, I looked at Sidney Poitier as a regal man of great talent! They way he spoke always resonated with me for some reason. ⠀ ⠀ I absolutely loved the movies. Especially the trilogy of ‘Uptown Saturday Night’, ‘ Let’s Do It Again’, ‘A Piece Of The Action’.⠀ ⠀ As a young man, I learned he was the first black man ever to win an academy award. He also was a champion of civil rights that moved in the world with grace, style and dignity! ⠀ ⠀ The word “icon” is thrown about a lot. In the case of Sidney Poitier, he is the true definition of the word. ⠀ ⠀ I’m honored to have known Sidney, even if only a little bit. I’ve learned a lot from him, just by the way he moved in the world. (If there’s no Sidney, there’s no Denzel, Chadwick, Jeffery Wright, Cheadle, Omar Epps, Michael B, Michael K, and on and on!) ⠀ He is truly what is known as ‘a measure of a man!’ 🙏🏾🕊 M~ #SidneyPoitier

The Dude! @quincyjones⠀ ⠀ Hailing from the south side of Chicago, (as myself) I grew up watching and listening to everything Q did. I did my best to learn every lesson he was putting down! ⠀ ⠀ It was so important to see someone who looked like me achieving the things I aspired to do. I can honestly say, I would not have had the long amazing career I've had, if it were not for the existence of Quincy Jones!⠀ ⠀ Two of my favorite quotes from him are:⠀ "You cannot get an A if you're afraid of getting an F.” And, "Excellence isn't an act, it's a habit!"⠀ ⠀ ⠀ The most impressive thing about Q to me is not all of the countless accolades and awards and trophies he's amassed over his long and distinguished career.
