September ‘08. I was supposed to be in Oregon shooting a movie whose funding had fallen through. My mom wanted to get my mind off of the anxiety and took me to Seaworld San Diego for a behind the scenes tour. I had no idea I would be a zookeeper myself 10 years later. But this was a momentous occasion in my life. I bonded with Rosie, a beluga whale who was slowly getting over the loss of her baby. This is a very difficult time for so many people. My heart hurts for everyone, people and animals, that have been so drastically affected by this pandemic. Stay home, so we can all get back to caring for those that matter most to us.

I got to experience DragonCon for the first time this year and had the most incredible time. I enjoyed walking around and seeing people celebrating the things they love. Nerds supporting nerds, I loved it so much. I included pictures of some of the favorite cosplays and a picture of how my friend group spent much of the long weekend. They introduced me to #Wingspan a couple months ago and I’ve been obsessed ever since. All of the bird facts on the cards are the cherry on top. I’ve ordered the expansion packs and I’m curious to see if any of the birds I work with are included…. And the last picture is a personal favorite. The boy and I have recently made a concerted effort in expanding our collection of old video games. We went to 4 different stores on our 1-day drive to Atlanta for the con and this was our haul. Most games were less than $5. It was just a fun journey. I know this kinda a long post, but I am just so appreciative of the people in my life. I never would have gone to #DragonCon without them and it was definitely a highlight for the year.

Anybody that knows me knows what a terrible secret keeper I am. I am also a terrible liar and spoil most surprises. Back in January, @soulless.ging and I hatched a plan. @bigrigcarly was gonna be off work for a couple months, stuck at home, bored out of her mind, and I was gonna surprise her with a week long visit. Joe, also a terrible secret keeper, made Carly open their door yesterday and there I was, waiting to bum it for a week with my favorite girl. I think Carly is still in shock, and I am too, at our ability to pull this off. Needless to say, I am so flipping happy to be spending a week with my person. We obviously spent our first day at a local zoo but I would gladly sit on a couch all week just to spend time with Carly. Here’s to a week of video games, 24, beer, and pure bliss with the girl who completes me.
This is an appreciation post for some of the most incredible people I have the honor of calling best friends. When I became a zookeeper 7!!! years ago, I was really trying to figure out who I was as a person and what was truly important to me. I could never imagined it would lead me to find such quality people who have really helped me learn to love myself. They got to celebrate their Disney anniversaries last night and E-Beth was kind enough to bring me as her date. We laughed so freaking much and ran in the rain and I really couldn’t imagine having a better time. This was absolutely a core memory for me that I will cherish forever. Shout out to these shoes! They bring me so much joy! Originally purchased as my wedding shoes (10/10, so comfy and was able to dance the night away) they stayed on all night. Every adult should own a pair. And they were only $35!!! Morale of the story: find your people, run in the rain, wear light up shoes for all the important life events.

Today was a very exciting day for me. I spent about 20 minutes watching this metallic starling hang half its body outside of its nest, trying to decide if today was the day it would attempt to move outside of its comfy home. I was able to witness the moment it catapulted itself outside and right next to the ledge I was standing next to. After the initial shock, I grabbed it and took it to our office to be banded, feathers pulled for sexing, and got a weight on my new friend. At 50g, it is definitely the smallest animal I have had under my care, but that joy and excitement of watching animals thrive while under your care never gets old. I’m also lucky to be surrounded by people that share in my excitement of these little moments. We don’t name most birds in our aviary since we have over 200, but I look forward to getting to name this one once we know what it is. For now, please enjoy this grumpy muppet. Edit: this bird was confirmed to be a boy. His name is Waldo. After this photo was taken, it was about 3 weeks until my coworkers and I saw him more than every other day. We typically see birds at least once a day, but he did not vocalize as much as is typical for fledglings, making it much more difficult to locate him. He will have this plumage until about summer 2022, when he will get his adult feathers on his chest.

My friend and I did these for our coworkers. Feel free to compare to our cookies from January 2016. I’d say our skills have gotten better. And the taste was fantastic! The icing consistency needed some work and didn’t have enough flavor, for my preferences. But it was good to sit, chat, and decorate our feelings.
