BOUNDLESS| Wednesday night at @antisocialoffline in Mumbai was special. I def had butterflies before hitting stage because of the nature of this set. I’d set a couple compositions or passages of compositions that would act as punctuation points to the set, and I’d set some broad parameters (e.g there were 4 sections, each section was in one pitch), but besides that it was literally a free for all. The butterflies were palpable before I went on stage, but then I remembered who I was and what it is I do. I remembered that I had a set of amazing musicians/artists on stage, who were passionate and invested in going on this journey with me. So I went up on stage, turned on the Tambura and started vocally exploring. And from that moment, the audience lifted and drove the whole 1.5 hour journey forward. Y’all were so beautiful! Singing and moving and living this experience with us, the entire time. At times we got loud and wild, and then there were moments of extreme quiet and intimacy. Big big love to brother @santanu_hazarika_art jamming with us and creating such an incredible piece. Big big love to brothers @christhejason, @vst_rahul, @hashbass, #HNBhaskar and @nikhilvpai for building this sonic journey with me. Here’s to spontaneity, ingenuity, love and collectively creating transcendent energy.

Near the end of last 2021, I went to Bhagalpur to be a part of @moitrashantanu’s “Songs of the River” project. He had been travelling down the Ganga, meeting new people, telling stories, and creating music all along the way. This journey was a deeply personal one for him, I was honoured to get to be part of it. The few days that I got to spend with him and the SOTR family were life changing, truly. I’ve never gotten to be one with the Ganga river before, and to be able to really just sit with it, and feel it’s energy was profound. Shantanu moves with a true sense of purpose and joy. The whole team became like family to me. The Songs of the River series is now streaming on Hotstar, and I highly recommend you watch it. It’s stunning and honest. I’m in episode 4, and the song that I worked on with @moitrashantanu is in this episode.
Big big big love to @moitrasarada, @seen_by_p, @shripad_mudhalwadkar, @windowseattraveller, @ritiksingh99, @yogidholakia, @debjani441, @abhrabhattacharya, @suchisuvro

A brief explanation as to what y’all can expect at “Boundless” at @antisocialoffline on august 10th. A fully improvised 1.5 hour set, that’ll be more or less stream of consciousness, spontaneous music making on stage. As I’ve mentioned before, this show will not include my film songs.
I’ll be joined by fire musicians @christhejason on gtr, @hashbass on bass, @vst_rahul on drums, #HNBhaskar on violin. Hype that we’ll be joined by @santanu_hazarika_art who’ll be creating live art with us. Creative expression coming straight from intuition, reacting to each other, diving deep. I’m excited, see y’all soon.

Shiva Panchakshara Stotram ft. The SLGV Carnatic Choir •
My mom taught me the Shiva Panchakshara Stotram (Nagendra Haraya) when I was super young. On Mother’s Day this year, we decided to record a version of this piece with the students of her Carnatic vocal school, Sri Lalitha Gana Vidyalaya. That Sunday afternoon felt beautiful. Guru Purnima feels like the perfect day to release this

On August 10, I’ll be bringing an idea called Boundless to @antisocialoffline in Mumbai. The show will be fully improvised 1.5 hour set. Everything will be created on the spot, from melody to lyrics to sonic spaces (similar to what I’m doing in this clip). I will come equipped with some beats/instrumentals I’ve been working on to maybe drop at certain points of the set. In the next week I’ll post up more details of who’ll be joining me, etc.
I did this kind of a set for the first time in Brooklyn at the Sultan Room back in August 2021, and it was one of the most artistically rewarding experiences of my life. It’s important to note that no film songs will be performed during this set, it’ll be much more of an abstract experience. I can’t wait to share in this night with you all. Ticket link in bio.

A Change is Gonna Come •
Listened to a lot of Sam Cooke, Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin today. Growing up it was Carnatic music and Black music that formed my musical framework. Soul music is so immensely powerful. This song feels apt for where the world is at

The world is getting pulled outward in every direction. The universe is getting pulled outward in every direction.
Each of us has a microcosmic relationship to the universe
We’re all getting pulled outward in every direction
What were we gifted with though? One thing that comes to mind is sentience.
Our unique ability to marry emotion with logic. How powerful it is.
And how profoundly heartbreaking it is that we rarely use it for good. It needn’t be that way though. There are enough people that believe primally in the potential that can be tapped into only through intense goodness and integrity.
I’m constantly reminded of the beauty that comes from a commitment to not only the pursuit of excellence, but also the pursuit of truth. The beauty I speak of is deep, naked and fiery. It is not always nice, but it is always noble. It’s not always aesthetic, but it is always honest.
Couple days ago during our show at Erode, I consciously tried to make eye contact with as many people in the audience as possible. Maybe it’s just the constant barrage of information by way of the internet, but it feels like increasingly the world is cracking at many of its most deeply rooted fault lines. Pressure building as more and more of society’s most fundamental ailments scream louder and with more despair, with no real solutions forward being built.
So, I find myself (like many others I’m sure) searching for goodness in any and all places where I think I can find it. Part of the search is a selfish need for respite. But I think the other part is driven by the belief that people experiencing instances of goodness is what will allow for the a-ha moments to show us a way forward.
I know that human beings are at their best when inspired. (caption continued in comments)
