I (2022) [40 x 30 x 7 cm] Ashes to ashes, dust to dust. #gabrieloshea Series of paintings made with the remains (pigmented in black) of sculptures from recent years, ash, hair, resin, glue, metal, plastic, plaster, dust, cloth, among other materials. – ‘we therefore commit this body to the ground, earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust…’ The title was taken from a phrase (from the burial service in the book of common prayers) we hear before burying a body; in the hope of the desired resurrection in eternal life. The earth, our remains, the ash, the wounds; the horror that goes hand by hand with our subconscious throws us into a void that confronts us with a blank wall, nothingness, nihilism. After the death of ideals, norms, values, God; we are confronted with the absence of a theological justification that as well as filling us with doubts, also drives us towards a search for our own spiritual growth, ¨creatio ex nihilo¨, since it forces us to keep life in a continuous growth and change without the need to follow a written template and therefore free ourselves from the wires that tie us down and do not let us move from that rusty prison of one single form. In México we walk on a cascade of violent images that haunt us at every step, on every screen, in every dream. We live in constant fear, in an illusion that has turned us into statistics that increase day by day. We are confronted with the vestiges of what was once adored.
