Leonardo DiCaprio Instagram – This month the government of the Republic of Congo, with the support of @thewcs, @rewild and others, announced that the country’s first three marine protected areas (MPAs) have been created. The MPAs cover 1,544 square miles (4,000 square kilometers) and will include important nesting grounds for Leatherback Turtles, and migratory routes and breeding habitat for Atlantic Humpback Whales. The areas are also home to 40 species of sharks and rays—including Whale Sharks, the biggest fish in the ocean.

Local fishers were consulted in creating the MPAs, and the newly protected areas include community fishing zones to ensure that the MPAs benefit and contribute to the food security of local communities. The three areas include some of the most productive coastal and offshore fisheries in the world.

Leonardo DiCaprio Instagram – Just four years after researchers identified the Mato Grosso Titi Monkey as its own species, the small monkey has been named one of the 25 most endangered primates in the world. The new report, ‘Primates in Peril 2022-2023,’ launched this week in Mato Grosso, Brazil at the 19th Congress of the Brazilian Society of Primatology. The Mato Grosso Titi Monkey is one of four primate species on the list from Brazil, which is home to more primate species than any other country in the world.

The biggest threat to the Brazilian Amazon is deforestation by the cattle industry, both for pastures and feed crops (primarily soybeans), and the Mato Grosso Titi Monkey lives within the largest area of deforestation. Conservationists are now starting to look at how best to mitigate the threats to the Mato Grosso Titi Monkey and develop a plan for its protection, including law enforcement at Juruena National Park, the largest protected area for the species.

The biennial ‘Primates in Peril’ report is a collaborative effort of the IUCN SSC Primate Specialist Group, the International Primatological Society and @Rewild.
