Leonardo DiCaprio Instagram – In the mid 2000s, illegal cattle ranches, many with links to narcotrafficking, threatened to completely decimate Guatemala’s Maya Biosphere Reserve and its communities. During the past decade, the government of Guatemala and partners risked life and limb to expel the illegal ranchers and take the forest back. Recently, in a historic moment, the government gave out 30-year contracts permitting local communities to manage and restore these forests, creating jobs while protecting nature.
