Whenever I look into your eyes, I see a lifetime. A lifetime of unfaltering laughter, cherished talks, and glorious sunsets. I see the first time we looked at each other, that cosy winter evening when we shared an ice cream, and the time you held my hand as we walked the shores of an endless beach.
I also see the thousands of days and memories yet to arrive, filled with love and light. And that’s all I need, really. To look into your eyes and know that a lifetime resides in there. That’s where I find my home.

An already magnificent Goa was all the more mirthful when one fine morning, I found myself ambling its crystal blue shores. Up above, the sun was preparing to glide from plump silver clouds. Whereas beneath my feet, the soft earth pressed and swelled with each poised step I took. In these soothing moments of dawn, I was accompanied by Pragnya and Hemanth, a joyful couple who had tied the knot recently.
As we ambled on the beach, their laughter and conversation filled the salty air with melodious chimes. And everywhere we looked, the sheer glory of life greeted us with open arms. A glimmering horizon, the fleeting company of birds, the lone boat passing by all made for a gorgeous story, and I was thoroughly delighted to find myself in it.
It was during these tender moments that I noticed Hemanth and Pragnya lost in conversation, reveling in each others’ company. And so, as they sat curled up by the earthy rocks, the sun began to show up in a fanfare of bright pinks and reds in the sky.
Admiring the frame, I decided not to steer too close to the couple and simply freeze this golden moment of love from afar. As I clicked the shutter button on my camera, it was as if the waves of warmth and love had found their way into my heart. I could not help but wish that I could remember this moment for a long, long time.

Deep in the heart of this soil, there is a tale as old as time.
It speaks of life, death, and a pyre sublime.
You try to tame it, name it, or even reframe it with all your might.
But the fire keeps burning, and the pages keep turning.
Far down into the night, when the world is fast asleep dreaming of deep blue oceans and shimmering golden cities, the Manikarnika Ghat of Varanasi is wide awake. It burns in sienna embers and saffron pyres and molten fires, consuming bodies and a bit of the heart of any onlooker brushing its grounds.
And upon my recent visit to Varanasi, known famously as the city as old as time, I had the chance to document this ghat through its people. A meagre team of 35, the Majhi Nau Samaj takes the holy responsibility of helping cremate nearly 200 bodies every day like a clockwork at Manikarnika Ghat. Taking home about 300 rupees a day for the toil, they lead an unimaginable life.
Every day, they leave their dainty homes at Raj Ghat at 3 am, walking the crescent-shaped line of the city’s ghats to reach Manikarnika. Then, at 4 in the morning, they start collecting firewood that reaches them by the holy river Ganga in a boat. And one hour after the other, they keep gathering and distributing timber, paving the way to heaven for the deceased.
Witnessing the rituals of the burning ghat up close, I was in utter awe of the vivid colours, vibrant textures, and peculiarly sombre mood of Manikarnika Ghat. As I took this portrait of a handful of the Majhi Nau Samaj members going about their day, I could not help but wonder how the function of this place is much more sacred and profound than what meets the eye.

This is a city where peace and chaos meet.
Where ashes rise, and virtues breathe.
Her streets are coloured with stories untold,
Some sights to ponder and some to behold.
And no matter how inward you go, how deep you dive.
You’ll forever find treasure but never arrive.
Varanasi, to me, is a city that never ends. It is as if the city’s stories, people, events, and mysteries have been playing an ages-old game of tag– always being passed on but never coming to an end.
On my recent visit, I had the chance to rise early on with the city and make myself a part of its humdrum. On a dewy Wednesday morning, I awoke at 4:30 in the morning, looking forward to the soothing boat ride from Dasashwamedha to Assi Ghat. A serenading hour in the boat and a blissful arati later, I found myself in the winding gullies just close to the Manikarnika Ghat.
With a choice of a new path after every dozen steps, Varanasi unfolds slowly and amusingly in these serpentine streets. I admired the soft light that painted the morning tender with a left turn here and a right turn there. The locals chattered away about their mohallas and the affairs of the city, pausing every once in a while to relish the ring of a temple bell somewhere. An ever-changing cluster of cows, street dogs, and fragile-looking two-wheelers kept me company as I walked without a motive, simply taking in the distinct way of life that Benaras is known for.
At one of these many turns, I came across this gentleman sitting on a tiny stone porch, sipping his morning tea without a care for the world. In the chaos of the city’s everyday events, he seemed to have built his own pocket of peace. And at this sight, I couldn’t help but admire the character on his face and the textures and colours that enveloped him.
As I took hold of my camera to take a picture of him, an unbeknownst cow happened to walk right into the frame, as if quietly claiming her presence. Smiling, I thought how perfectly this captured the raw and free-spirited essence of Varanasi and clicked the shutter button on my camera.

She is a museum of stories, faith, and destiny;
At her every curve, centuries hide.
In each petite nook and at every vibrant corner
A new tale is born, and an old one has died.
And so she lives on, carefree and unfaltering,
With a secret that she reveals to none–
How long has it been since her first legend?
And since her very own story had begun?
The map of Varanasi brims with a multitude of stories, each more colourful and meaningful than the other. So, eager for the city to win me over yet again on my recent visit, I had awoken well before dawn and set out in search of interesting stories. Walking under a deep purple sky, I had made my way to the labyrinthine alleys of the city. Soon enough, the sun was making its grand arrival, gracing the tapered lanes with dispersed pockets of sunshine and shadow. But the air was still soothingly quiet, as if the buildings and streets were fast asleep alongside their residents.
I took this picture during one such tranquil moment in the wee hours of the day, having come across this gentleman who diligently carried on with his work. Admiring his zest, I had decided to take the tiny flight of stairs that was just across him. Little did I know, a more curious frame awaited me there. Enveloped in a warm corner and blissfully lost in a sweet slumber, a street dog rested upon a house porch. I instantly clicked a picture to create a memory of this moment, gentle as to not wake the dog up but quick enough to catch the kindly man before he moved away.
I admire this frame as it shows a juxtaposition of two distinct lives– the man engrossed in hard work to earn a living, and the dog devouring carefree, leisurely slices of life. Naturally, I was delighted to have come across two subjects and the contrasting nature of their being, all simmered down into this fleeting moment that I could gracefully capture.
Like I always say, as a visual artist, one must keep all their five senses engaged and observe every little miracle that comes and goes.
