It’s been a while now, you and me. It’s been a stretch of us and that us finds me, at times, remembering a lesser me, a romantic notion that what was, some version of myself before that lifted cars and shit gold. I envision a single me who could rule the world if only the time and the focus, and then reality hits me and I can feel myself alone, by myself, not uncomfortable but knowing, on a deeper plane, that you are gone, and that your breath on my cheek is gone and that your chuckle when you’re frustrated by my irritations is inaudible because it’s not there and that face, your face, and all the heart that comes with it, as I watch you against the sea, as I watch you, like today, rolling in the park with the kids, while a different, happier tear falls down my cheek — you, my greatest love, my Everest of love, my landing — would be gone. And because of a super-masculine hiccup I, like so many, thought for a moment that I could accomplish the world without you, before I’d remember that you are the world within me and my world is complete. We are, this Valentine’s Day, just living another one of our totally personal to us days and this day is as perfect and human and in love as yesterday was and tomorrow forever will be. That no matter what happens you are my partner and I am the most fortunate man to be able to hold your hand through it all. Charmed, I am. Charmed between you and these four children. Markys language of the heart is LOVE, JOY, GRATITUDE and ACCEPTANCE and so much more … so many times we forget to lead our days with the language of our hearts … out of either fear or insecurity or some people just aren’t aware of there heart language… i love and adore that that’s the only way Marky has ever known to lead his days and life …

There’s something about the weather of a birthday that moves memorable. Today is yours and the weather holds fast but in the background storms churn and mate and what might come (or what might were) are days of creative ebullience or that digging down to learn oneself along this ever deepening circus trajectory of a life. 1,200 miles of California coastline is etched into my DNA. My parents, grandparents, great grandparents and great great grandparents — homesteaders, hunters, families in the dirt, the dust bowl, the oil and gold rushing underneath it all. The natives of this land — the holes left in rocks on our ranch, the arrowheads, their histories still so visible and current. And we feel the ghosts inside the bald eagles and red tailed hawks perched at the top of distant oak and pine trees at 7am. Then John Fonte, John Steinbeck, Joan Didion. Or those that migrated here: Kerouac, Miller, Nin, Alice Walker, Twain. There’s so many more who combed the emotional topography that instigated those sentences that threw us so young into fits of imagination, awe, and wild self discovery. California will one day break off into the sea they say, and me right along with it.
