It’s been a stretch of us and that us finds me, at times, remembering a lesser me, a romantic notion that what was, some version of myself before that lifted cars and shit gold. I envision a single me who could rule the world if only the time and the focus, and then reality hits me and I can feel myself alone, by myself, not uncomfortable but knowing, on a deeper plane, that you are gone, and that your breath on my cheek is gone and that your chuckle when you’re frustrated by my irritations is inaudible because it’s not there and that face, your face, and all the heart that comes with it, as I watch you against the sea, as I watch you, like today, rolling in the park with the kids, while a different, happier tear falls down my cheek — you, my greatest love, my Everest of love, my landing — would be gone.
