Cannot explain my excitement this morning flicking through ELLE Magazine and coming across myself amongst so many empowering women, many of whom I am lucky to call friends. From @soniaboyceartist whose powerful British Pavilion made an indelible mark on history and on so many lives, to the trailblazing beacon of support @ebeleokobi to the much-needed rallier for change of @elliepennick of @guts_gallery , confidante and example for great leadership @bettinakorek and filmmaker @ayoakingbade whose films connect to my many inner selves…
In the interview, with the incredible @omfgnoway , I discuss my beginnings in art. From a childhood obsession with museums, to a ever evolving connection with seeing the art of Nigeria (Benin Bronzes, Idia Mask…), my cultural heritage, displayed and confined in the British Museum – a tandem source of inspiration, but painfully bittersweet in its displacement.
History is always shifting – cultural sovereignty is key.
Art has always been the most fascinating way for me to learn about myself. As the article ends, I am committed to being the person I wish I could have seen as a young girl, where museums hallways confusingly were where I felt most at home.
I’m excited to see this, and so many inspiring people because I am excited to see what the future holds.
