I am not okay. A mass shooting killed numerous women last night in Atlanta. Numerous Asian women. As an Asian American and a woman – already exhausted from, well, my entire life and last year – I am tired, frustrated and sickened.
• if you are not aware of the insane rise in violence towards Asians, almost 4000 anti-Asian crimes last year with multiple murders for example, you need to broaden your network just as you did last year for BLM. Where is your solidarity and empathy now? I’m asking for your help. Many don’t have Asian friends and/or follow many Asian people, change that now.
• Asian women have been continually sexualized and fetishized, this needs to stop now! We are not your exotic playthings.
• Asian women have also been and continue to be the butt of jokes, how many times have you heard “me love you long time”?
• There is a massive misconception around AAPI folks — we are not crazy rich and we are not doing okay. the fact is 1 in 4 Asian Americans lives below the poverty line and Harvard Business Review recently released that Asians are the LEAST likely BIPOC in the workplace to be promoted. The PERCEPTION is that Asians are managers and successful, but the reality is we are not.
• a HUGE part of the AAPI community (esp older generations) has a language barrier and so doesn’t report crimes, talk about being a victim, which further adds to a misunderstanding that everything is fine
• classism and misogyny and colonialism run DEEP, it’s not just racism at work here. The only way forward is for ALL marginalized communities to come together, stop letting history divide us all and come together as one majority to move forward.
So please educate yourself on the heartbreaking details and help us to #stopasianhate – which currently only has 35k mentions though the community has been tirel

Things at SAFE are rough right now and if you’re in a position to help, we need some support. At our Children’s Shelter, pipes burst in two of our five cottages. One of these cottages was our Teen Parent and Early Childhood cottage, which houses teen parents in the foster care system and their babies. We moved kids, mattresses, and baby beds to another cottage, only to have the same thing happen again. We are now shuffling some kids and staff across town to ensure that we have space, including beds for staff who are taking double shifts when other youth care workers are stuck in the snow.
The Children’s Shelter needs the following: drinking water, frozen pizzas, cold and hot cereal, and wipes. You can drop them off at the Children’s Shelter at 4800 Manor Road. Or you can make a donation to safeaustin.org/donate. Thank you to our community—we hope you are safe and warm.

Many people have been asking what they can do to help aid the victims of this unprecedented winter disaster in Texas. Here are a few links to local organizations and individuals @jensenackles and I have supported.There are also👆links above to help statewide. Austin’s own Chef Michael Fojtasek,from @olamaieaustin is making 1300 meals for EMS workers and the folks sheltering at the Palmer Events Center warming station tomorrow and Saturday. He has committed to make another 700 meals for Any Baby Can and their clients on Sunday. He is raising the money needed to pay the farmers for chicken and produce and to make those meals. Right now hundreds of Austin residents are living outside or they are stranded indoors without water/power/heat/gas or shelter from the elements in this historic disaster. Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States in 1865. But still…156 years later the fight for equality, justice, and the end of oppression continues for the Black community. Black history is American history. We should reflect on this day while continuing to educate ourselves. Juneteenth National Independence Day and Black History must be taught in schools and spoken about in our homes. Critical Race Theory education is so very important in bringing about real equality.
