I know I speak for all New Zealanders in conveying our deepest sympathy to members of the Royal Family and condolences to King Charles III on behalf of the Government and New Zealanders at this time of enormous loss. The last days of the Queen’s life captures who she was in so many ways. Working till the very end, on behalf of the people she loved. And that is why I am sure that we will have received the news of her passing with both emotions of deep sadness, but also deep gratitude for a life that was utterly and completely devoted to the service of others. The Queen has been such a constant in our lives for 70 years, the longest serving Monarch in British history. Over her reign she has come to define notions of service, charity and consistency. Her commitment to her role and to all of us has been without question and has been unwavering. She has also demonstrated courage and compassion and humour. A strong memory I will have of her is her laughter. She was extraordinary. To honour the passing of the Queen of New Zealand and realm countries, we move into a period of official mourning. Flags will be flown at half mast. Preparations begin for a state memorial service to be held after the official funeral is held in the United Kingdom. While we await details of these arrangements, we anticipate it will be held in the UK about 10 days’ time. I know many will want to share their thoughts at this time. There will be condolences books placed in the foyer of the Beehive, the National Library and Wellington Cathedral. I expect across New Zealand local arrangements will be made. This is a time of deep sadness. Young or old, there is no doubt that a chapter is closing today. And with that, we share our thanks for an incredible woman, who we were lucky to call our Queen. In the early hours of this morning I had the privilege of speaking on behalf of New Zealand at the United Nations. With so many challenges in front of us, it was a chance to speak firmly against the war in Ukraine and the existence of nuclear weapons. It was also a chance to reiterate the importance of climate action, and the work we’ve being doing on terrorist and violent extremist content online. It’s a dark time, but I’m an optimist. I absolutely believe with diplomacy, dialogue, and action we can make progress on the great challenges of our time. A truly humbling experience to be in the UK these past few days to represent New Zealand, and to farewell Her late Majesty the Queen. But today I was reminded that amongst everything else, she was a mother, a grandmother and a great grandmother. Watching her family follow her as she left the church will be one of my over riding memories- right next to seeing other the New Zealanders sitting together in the vast space on behalf of us all to say one final “thank you, ma’am” I will admit to waking up this morning and briefly wondering where I was – but I can confirm we’ve made it to New York for the United Nations General Assembly! A busy day with the opening session, a Food Security event and co-leading the Christchurch Call Leaders Summit on ending terrorism and violent extremism online, but a great day nonetheless! A genuine highlight was catching moments with leaders I’ve been lucky enough to get to know over the years. It’s been a while since we’ve seen each other face to face. It’s nice to be back, even when the challenges confronting the globe are significant. It’s 4.30am at home in New Zealand, and I’m sitting in the “green room” at the United Nations listening to the Prime Minister of the Netherlands and preparing to deliver a national statement on behalf of New Zealand. Definitely don’t expect anyone to be tuning in live, but I’ll post the text here later (in case anyone wants to have a read.) “Ukraine wants peace…the world wants peace.” A powerful speech today from the President of Ukraine at the United Nations General Assembly. I also had the opportunity to briefly meet Ukraine’s First Lady, Olena Zelensky and have a longer meeting with the Prime Minister. The PM was really clear about how devastating the illegal war in Ukraine has been, but at the same time he was also clear that New Zealand’s contribution and response has been strong and appreciated. “Ukraine wants peace…the world wants peace.” A powerful speech today from the President of Ukraine at the United Nations General Assembly. Started the day reading tributes to the Queen from around the world- a reminder of how many lives she touched. If you’d like to leave your own tribute, condolence books can be found at the National Library and the Beehive in Wellington, and many others will be popping up around the country as people share their memories and thanks. 📸 RNZ Image one – signing the condolence book on Friday. Huge thanks to those who participated and those who came or tuned in from@around the country. It was a fitting way to say goodbye, and “thank you.” Such a beautiful service in Wellington to mark her late Majesty the Queen’s life. A good reminder to get out and vote this week everyone. *If you’re returning voting papers in Wellington by post box, it is recommended you post your vote by 4 October to ensure it’s received before the cut-off date. Post isn’t your only option to return your papers. There are over 50 Wellington City Council-branded ballot boxes where you can drop off your voting papers across Wellington. Ballot boxes are provided at every Wellington supermarket and Council library, as well as several other locations. Votes can be delivered to ballot boxes up to 12 noon on Saturday 8 October. So go on, make sure you get out and vote! #pauleagleformayor First attempt at a floating green screen….thought I’d use it to share a few insights into the New Zealand economy at the moment. It’s tough out there globally, but there are reasons for us to feel optimistic about the future. Here’s a few! This is me holding a fish skin…Hoki to be exact. It’s about to be turned into a highly valuable collagen product. Fantastic to visit Blenheim yesterday and see first hand what our exporters are doing to turn waste into valuable products, and to officially open the New Zealand Wine Centre which will help us continue to lead the way with new technology and innovation in the way we produce wine. A great day! Recently I had the privilege of meeting with some of the women from Afghanistan who have recently taken refuge in New Zealand. Amongst them are Doctors, entrepreneurs, journalists and sporting champions just to name a few. But the regime in Afghanistan means they cannot live their lives as they choose. We are seeing other examples around the world at present, and the recent protests in Iran are a reminder of why it’s so important to keep raising these issues no matter where in the world we are. Up in West Auckland today visiting some of the new screen industry studio space we’ve helped support. Some fun facts: there are now 7900 employees in the Auckland screen sector, and that’s increasing at about 5% per year. That growth has been supported by a significant increase in studio space (from 5000sqm in 2014 to 42,100sqm in 2021) and 80% of those employed across this sector are medium to highly skilled workers. We have some really exciting new productions either here, or coming, and the trick will continue to be ensuring they help benefit and train our domestic workforce, and to see those numbers keep ticking up!
