I recently had the privilege to spend a week in Ghana with @WaterAid to see how clean water & decent toilets has transformed lives 🙏🏿 I met with community chiefs , the president of Ghana (Nana Akufo-Addo) and The Young Pupils showed me around their new school toilets & handwashing points and expressed how it had affected their community. It was an incredibly humbling and life altering experience. I look forward to working with WaterAid in 2020 to reach even more people in West Africa with these lifesaving basics. I need to put this fight into perspective. This is not respectively just about the killing of George Floyd and police brutality .That incident is just the straw that broke the camel’s back . This is a fight against racism in America . Period . From white citizens taking the law into their own hands and killing an unarmed black jogger ( Ahmaud Arbery) ; From white women using their white privilege calling the police on an innocent black man , when she is breaking the law ( Amy cooper) ; to the police killing an unarmed black man in custody with his knee for 9 minutes with a smile ( George Floyd RIP) .This fight is about white racist people (and any other racists of a different color) changing their attitude, behavior and hearts toward black people forever. Because – “ we don’t want your prayers and condolences no more .“

The death of George Floyd and countless other black citizens has exposed the effect of “overt” racial abuse ( ultimately resulting in death ) . But it is important to also draw attention to the “covert“ effects of racism and how these effects are also killing black men and women slowly In my directorial debut feature FARMING , I showed the effects that constant racial abuse had on me growing up as a child and a teenager in racist Britain . The film examines the devastating psychological effects racism has upon a black person’s psyche ranging from – Fear & Paranoia – Acute insecurity – Self-loathing – Hypertension – Low Self-Esteem – & Chronic lack of Self-Worth . We as black people have been undergoing these symptoms (consciously or unconsciously) for generations. The racial trauma runs so deep that we are mere shadows of who we were intended to be . It is heart-warming to see the thousands of the people across the world stand up and join our fight for justice and equality. But After the cameras have moved on , generations of black people will still need healing emotionally and psychologically . Legislation will not and cannot do that . So if you truly believe that a black life matters … ask yourself honestly what is your follow through …when the cameras are off ? I call upon the British Govt to make FARMING a part of the school curriculum, so that children growing up today are fully aware of how we as an African people helped shape british culture as we know it today – – Check out FARMING and witness some of the effects racism can have on the psyche of a black person .
