Just cradling a baby ichthyosaur skull. This is the biggest skull I’ve found so far on the Jurassic Coast, and although it’s pretty massive, it’s only a juvenile of its species, Temnodontosaurus platyodon. The biggest adults of this species had skulls that could get up to 2 metres long. Prepping of a compressed ammonite fossil from the UK. I’m using a pneumatic tool (an air scribe) to carefully remove the rock that has covered the shell for 200 million years. 🗿🐚🗿 Some fossils are in really tough rock that is very tricky to remove. This one, however, is in really soft shale that comes away from the fossil with relative ease. One of the smallest ichthyosaurs I’ve found on the Jurassic Coast. This one would have been very young when it died. 🐬🦈🐬 Ichthyosaurs gave birth to live young and had multiple offspring each time. From the number of juvenile fossils I’ve found, it seems that they had a high infant mortality rate. A couple of nice large ichthyosaur teeth I found recently on the Jurassic Coast. 🦷🦷🐬 Usually, you only find the crowns of these teeth (the shiny top part) when they’re loose like this, but with these ones, the roots were there as well. This is a section of the best crinoid colony I’ve found on the Jurassic Coast. This piece measures about 2 feet across and is one of dozens of bits that will eventually fit back together into a colony that measures about 7 feet long! 🐙🐚🐙 There are dozens of individual crinoids in the colony, all preserved with golden pyrite on the surface, making it look almost robotic and metallic. ⚙🤖 I’ve not got the space currently to fit it all back together, so this one is another fossil on the “to-do” pile! 🦴🐚🦴 Crinoids are animals closely related to star fish and sea urchins.
