I learned something completely new and disorienting today. I saw a woman begging in the Gare de Lyon. She suffered from what I now have learned is genu recurvatum, a disorder in which one’s knees bend the wrong way. These old photos do not do justice to the distortion of this woman’s body. I’m quite surprised I got this old without ever hearing of this disorder.
Vincent Van Gogh is buried next to his brother Theo in the cemetery at Auvers-sur-Oise. It is adjacent to the wheat fields he painted just before his death at 37. Besides Vincent, only Michelangelo’s work has ever made me weep on seeing it in person. But Vincent makes me weep for other reasons as well. Today, I also stood in the room where he died. A mere 75 square feet, it held in his last hours a heart too big for the world.

Mom’s been gone three years today. It seems a minute. It seems a lifetime.
I worked with Leslie Jordan on a few episodes of REASONABLE DOUBTS. I did not know him well, but I admired him as a hilarious performer. His one-man show about growing up in the south was both hysterical and moving. I’m very sad to see him go.
Hope my fellow vets had a good Veterans Day and felt properly appreciated. Here’s a photo of me during my first tour of duty.

I’ll just leave this here.
One of the things I like about the area around Durango, Mexico is how lonely it can be. Sometimes that’s just right.
