Mike’s Midterm Tsunami Truth 40: We win either way today because love and kindness always wins out over hate and greed. Sometimes it takes a while. And when we win today (or tomorrow or 2024) we’ll fight to better the lives of everyone—including & especially the lives of those burdened with hate and confusion over what it should mean to be an American. Our love and compassion—and the ability to have a Political Party that knows how to present a cogent, compelling & convincing message—is how we’ll heal the politically despondent, those who have given up and are sadly staying home today, those who’ve been easily tricked into voting against their own best interests, and those who are succumbed with a mindless fear of “the other” who are going to hurt them or take what their white Christian leaders have promised them is theirs. And if we “lose,” as the media predicts—an outcome they will have willed into existence by convincing just enough Americans that the price of a gallon of gas is more important than the human rights of an entire gender and more important than the actual Democracy itself—then we’ll live to fight another day. A lie has a short shelf life when exposed to the resounding Truth. There will always be more of us than them, so let’s just figure out how to truly activate & embrace both that majority and the 80 million who are nonvoters. One way to do that is to follow through on our promises: Tax the rich, support the working class & their families, all women are equals, and we create a new generation of civically-engaged critical thinkers who read and act and love. I woke up today in good spirits, thoughtful of the future, but in need of a good laugh & a small dose of humanity. It’s 6am and I haven’t gone to bed. The headlines are already popping up on my screen: “No Signs of ‘Red Wave’ as Race for Congress Remains Tight” (New York Times) “Congress hangs in balance as Democrats defy expectations” (Washington Post) “‘Red wave’ fails to materialise as Fetterman clinches crucial Senate seat for Democrats” (The Guardian) “Control of Congress Remains at Stake as Democrats Fend Off Anticipated ‘Red Wave’” (The Wall Street Journal) So many of you have written to me through the night. So many of you who worked hard over these last months to prevent the bloodbath. A fascist takeover by a full slate of election deniers & voting suppressors. And now we know there’ll be no bloodbath. Not today. Because millions of us erected a force field around the haters & bigots to stop them in their tracks. And that’s what has happened. Sometimes you have to lose a battle or two in order to win the war. I love how you all knew that if for some reason we couldn’t create a blue tsunami on Nov 8, our second best choice was to make sure there’d be no red wave. And that is where we are at as America wakes up on The Day After. Last night, the GOP was in a state of shock as they found themselves, at least for now, in control of neither the House nor the Senate! They were unable to throw a single Dem out of the Senate. In fact just the opposite happened—the Dems were able to flip control of their PA Senate seat from a Republican to a Dem. In stunned disbelief, the Dems instantly went from a 50-50 Senate to a 51-49 Senate in their favor. Georgia & Nevada are still too close to call, but the Dem in Georgia holds a small lead, and the Dem in Nevada has played see-saw all night with the Republican. To be clear, they’ll be counting these votes for days, if not weeks,so it’s anybody’s guess what’ll happen. You need 218 House seats to hold a majority, to be able to pass (or defeat) a bill. Right now they’re 20 seats short of that & that’s why none of the networks/AP/New York Times have called the House for either Party. The looks on the faces of Fox News are glum. Mike’s Midterm Tsunami Truth 34: Deep Down, You Know You’re Being Played In order to accept the ruse that “the polls have shifted in the GOP’s favor,” then you’d have to truly believe the following horseshit being pedaled to you: The Pundits: “The female fury over the SCOTUS Roe decision has subsided. Women were initially angry & upset, but then calmed down & collected themselves, realizing the cost of a dozen eggs (chicken eggs) and the price of a gallon of gas was far more important than having their own absolute legal control over their reproductive organs—and that being ordered to carry a baby to term against their will was really no biggie.” The Truth: The men who own & run the media have NO clue just how outraged the vast majority of women remain over having it shoved in their face yet again that they’re second class citizens who’re never going to hold real power (74% of Congress is still held by men & 426 of the Fortune 500 companies are still run by men), that women will never be paid the same as men, and that 56% of those living in poverty and 64% of those working the lowest paid jobs are & will always be women as long as the patriarchy says so—or until the patriarchy is smashed. And these men who’ve been telling (lying to) you daily during this election that women don’t really worry their “pretty little heads” over this stuff—i.e. the literal man’s boot placed squarely on their necks as RBG used to say—are also telling us that women have put their “emotions” aside & now wake up every morning obsessed with the price of gas (a whopping 21 cents over a year ago!). Of course women would gladly give up their basic human rights for a gallon of gas! The men who think this way are either stupid, or they know all too well that they must depress the Dem vote by getting just enough of you to believe that women are now voting for the GOP. Mike’s Midterm Tsunami Truth #32: This Is All You Need to Know This is how the Republican Members of the U.S. House of Representatives have voted in the past two years. 100% of all Republican members of the 117th Congress in the House of Representatives in 2021-2022 voted against everything from cheaper drug prices to against fixing climate change, against the Voting Rights Act, against helping veterans with cancer and against prosecuting rich tax cheats. Mike’s Midterm Tsunami Truth #24: Vote Local, Win National Change begins at home—meaning right there in your neighborhood, your ward, your borough, your school district. It’s there where the crazies are trying to ban Maya Angelou. Where the Right is trying to stop affordable housing from being built. Where the Chamber of Commerce is trying to eliminate environmental regulations. Their mission is to stifle debate, to put a halt to change, to lock things down so that the big money in town calls the shots. That’s where the Ted Cruzes of this world get their start on the road to perdition. And if we don’t stop them there, they will one day become the next Marjorie Taylor Greene. So today I humbly beseech you to do a little research & find out who these local candidates are on your ballot. Look for a whip-smart local bartender (AOC) running for town council, or a middle school principal (Jamaal Bowman) on the ballot for County Commissioner or a local activist and mother (Cori Bush) seeking to become the township clerk. There are hundreds of these good people running across the country and it’ll feel good to find them, meet them and vote for them. The bigger changes that we seek nationwide begin right here in Our Town. As the t-shirt above says, the mayor in Jaws—the political hack who at the behest of the local business community demanded that the sheriff open up the beaches for that all-important tourism money-maker known as the 4th of July weekend (even though a mad shark who’d already killed a skinny-dipper was still lurking offshore)—by the time “Jaws 2” rolled around, this bastard was still the mayor! Proving unequivocally that if you don’t pay attention to your local elections, if we don’t do our duty as citizens, even in the “smallest” races on the ballot, there will be no night swimming left for any one. 18 days to #Roevember! Everything and anything that we do in these next 30 hours will decide the fate and the future of this unfinished Democracy. Tens of millions of our fellow Americans would prefer we not finish it. I understand. For them, the country has become too black and brown, too many women “taking over,” too many languages from the huddled masses they don’t understand, too many educated people, too much compassion for the have-nots, the disabled and the families who can’t afford a Christmas tree. Here are some headlines and pronouncements we’re seeing yesterday and today: “Republicans in Ruins with House as Consolation Prize” “Is It a Win When You Have a House with a Broken, Battered Party Inside?” “Republicans Squeak by with House Thanks to DeSantis Drawing Gerrymandered Map” “GOP Wins House with Razor-Thin Margin that May Cut Both Ways” “Republicans scrape back control of US House” Wow. How rare is it when the so-called winners (barely, of the House of Representatives) are actually considered a bunch of losers?! (Think Houston Astros, 2017 — won the World Series but forever known as a bunch of cheaters. Ouch.) That’s where the Republicans are at today. Americans at the polls last week resoundingly rejected Trump-backed candidates and chose to vote for Democracy and abortion rights over the cost of a gallon of gas. Especially when you’ve spent the past few months feeling politically hopeless and trying not to believe the “predictions” shoved down our throats that we are all going to drown in a Trumpian Red Wave of election deniers and right wing nutters. After the election on Wednesday, as I had for weeks, I tried to assure you that not only are we going to win the Senate seats in Nevada, Arizona and the Georgia runoff on December 6th, I think we are going to hold the House! Yet even after I shared with you 40 Tsunami Truths, still, until even this very moment that you’re reading this, you are sick to your stomach with the belief that of course we will lose the House. So let me make this simple observation — when in your American lifetime have they not called who has won the House SEVEN FRIGGIN’ DAYS AFTER THE POLLS HAVE CLOSED? Never! So what do you think is taking so long? Mike’s Midterm Tsunami Truth #29: They’ve Got Big Plans That We’ve Gotta Stop On June 24th this summer, our Supreme Court — 67% White, 78% Catholic, 59% Men and 66% who don’t know what dry shampoo is — issued their religious edict forcing all women of childbearing age who hold a fertilized egg into a government mandated and enforced pregnancy, under penalty of law. With a nation in shock — and a gender in revolt, the spoils of which will be revealed on spikes in 12 days — much was made of the clear and incoherent opinion issued by the 12th-century Vatican scholar Samuel Alito. But there was little attention paid to the concurring opinion by Justice Clarence Thomas who, like Alito, is a true believer in shoving vicious, never-uttered-by-Jesus Catholic ideology down the throats of America. On that day of infamy, Justice Thomas waxed poetically, wondering just how far the Christian Nationalists could take their Roe-killing decision. According to Thomas, very far. Here’s what he wrote in his concurring opinion: “We should reconsider all of this Court’s substantive due process precedents, including Griswold (which legalized Birth Control), Lawrence (which invalidated sodomy laws), and Obergefell (which legalized same-sex marriage). Because any substantive due process decision is “demonstrably erroneous,” we have a duty to “correct the error” established in those precedents. After overruling these demonstrably erroneous decisions…” So, to translate Thomas’ plans, here’s what he’d like the Court to do: Outlaw birth control. Outlaw same-sex sex. Outlaw same-sex marriage. The idea is to build on outlawing abortion, using the Court’s new rationale to expand their bans on other sexual behaviors they find to be deviant and against God’s will. But as we know, it’s usually the actual deviants, in their sick and twisted minds, who want to stop the “perverts” who use a diaphragm or a condom or an IUD, or any pill or device that grants women absolute control over their bodies. Mike’s Midterm Tsunami Truth 36: After writing daily since Sep that there’ll be a Blue Tsunami on Tues, I’m now hearing from Dem Party insiders who tell me (confidentially) that my belief in our victory is not unfounded but is now looking more & more, well, likely? A couple of these Dem apparatchiks had their own reasons to share this good news w/ me. One asked if I could stop saying we’re gonna win. “We’re worried if people think we’ve pulled ahead, there’s a chance they’ll say ‘oh good, I don’t need to vote!’” “That’s old thinking,” I texted back. “The public’s already setting new early-voting records. People—our people—are on fire! Women are fed up & in the middle of a not-so-quiet rampage. They’re gleefully looking forward to extracting the men from Congress who support the medieval practice of forced procreation.” “True,” he texted back. “Pollsters show abortion as #3 on the list of concerns, but that doesn’t account for the intensity of anger over Roe decision—it’s huge.” I added: “The anger from young voters is huge too. They know we’ve left them w/ a dying planet. Their only hope for survival is to toss out every last one of the planet killers.“ “Agreed. They’ll also vote in record numbers Tues.” Another takeaway from these talks was their belief that, in a post-Covid U.S., polling is a “broken science.” “Don’t dignify polls by referring to them as a science,” I said. “It’s the fraud of propaganda, trying to invent a factual basis for what’s a work of fiction.” “You’re essentially right,” one admitted. They pointed out that lots of “polls” are actually funded by corporate lobbying groups & others with GOP backing. Often when you hear about the latest “poll,” it’s really an aggregate of many polls & the GOP & business interests add their biased polls in the soup so that the % for their desired candidate rises to the top. “Look at the small print,“ one said. “Some list a ‘margin of error /- 10 or 12 pts!’” So it’s true—we’re being played for suckers. Mike’s Midterm Tsunami Truth 30: Shut Out the News! They’re Filling Your Head with Mush. I can tell from my mailbag that many of you are going mad. Even more of you have sunk into a deep depression. Nonstop polls, punditry & journalistic pomposity telling you all the ways the Dems have blown it, lost it, and how the Repugnants are soaring like eagles! Yes, you are told, you might as well sleep in on Election Day because this baby is over. It’s all a lie. They have no clue. They tell the story they want to tell. If it doesn’t fit their narrative, it’s not in the story. You’re being misled, bamboozled, hoodwinked, scared to death & made to believe the economy has imploded when the factual truth is that wages are up, unemployment’s the lowest in 50 years, more jobs have been created during this presidency than any other president in their first 2 years, inflation’s slowed, the economy grew 2.6% last quarter & everyone on Social Security is getting a whopping 8.7% increase in their monthly checks in 2023. So what’s really happening here? I’ll tell you: Your leg’s being seriously pulled—so hard that if you don’t stop listening to (and believing!) all this b.s., you’re going to lose more than a leg. TURN THE TV OFF! No cable news for the next 9 days! No reading the daily newspaper! TURN OFF THE NEWS ALERTS ON YOUR PHONE! What’s the point of letting them drive you insane? Why do we all get dozens of begging, scary emails every day from Democratic candidates telling us how they are being beaten into the ground by the GOP — “and please send me $17 by MIDNIGHT or I’m a goner!” How’s that helping?! Not one word in these emails about them promising to raise the minimum wage or end the filibuster. Just, “WE’RE DOOMED! SEND MONEY!” Zero messaging. How is this a winning strategy? Hundreds of thousands of us are working 24/7 to get out the vote when Democratic Party hacks are doing what they can to depress the vote. In the end it doesn’t matter. We have never thought they were ever going to ride to the rescue. We’ve always known that WE were going to have to crush the Trumpsters by our sheer numbers and fortitude. For 3 weeks now, I’ve written a daily missive giving you the facts & the truth (as I see it) about our chances to win big this #Roevember. 2 things I’ve noticed from the reaction you all have been sending me: 1) The majority of you have enthusiastically joined me in my belief that we’re going to crush these traitorous coup-supporting Republicans who’ve stripped women of basic human rights & seek to destroy the rest of a Democracy that is seriously hanging on by a thread; and 2) The rest of you are in full panic attack mode. Instead of believing in my fact-based optimism, you think I might have rose-colored glasses on. You want to believe I’m right, but you’ve bought into the pundit & pollster orgy of “analysis” about how the Republicans are now “surging” & the country has turned against the Dems who seem to have happily given us record inflation, rampant crime & trans restrooms in every elementary school. “Mike, I hope you’re right, but I’m afraid you’re not” everyone in this 2nd group writes to me. Let’s go over the 1 main fact that should guarantee the winning of ANY election: There are more of us than there are of them—by the MILLIONS! Dems have won the popular vote in 7 of the last 8 presidential elections. Amongst 33 states/territories who let you affiliate w/ a party when you register to vote, there are currently 48 million registered Dems vs. 36.4 million registered Republicans. There are also 35.3 million registered independents & a WSJ poll has Dems w/ a 38%-35% edge over Republicans among independents. The vast majority of Americans agree w/ us on ALL the major issues—legal abortion (62%), climate crisis (75%), minimum wage (62%), paid family leave (70%), legal marijuana (91%), unions (71%), Medicare for all (69%), Equal Rights Amendment for women (78%), mass incarceration, tax the rich (80%), free college (58%), free pre-K (71%), stopping voter suppression, LGBTQ rights (71%), take money out of politics, more gun control (70%), etc. The people are already with us—by a wide margin. Six months ago, the pundits, the press and the protectors of the established order put out a lot of stories about how the Republicans were going to clean up in the November Midterms. And why wouldn’t they write that? History was on the Republican’s side. Plus Biden had sunk in the approval ratings. Senators Manchin and Sinema had blocked the votes in the Senate for most of Biden’s agenda. It was shaping up to be a comfortable, predictable midterm narrative — like any good Hallmark movie executive produced by Conventional Wisdom — and at the center of it was good ole “Grandpa Joe.” But then things changed. Biden started getting one thing after another passed. The price of gas came down. He pardoned thousands of marijuana users. He finally began forgiving student debt. Simultaneously, Republican candidates stopped pretending they weren’t white nationalists, the FBI raided Mar-a-Lago, and the Supreme Court stripped the rights away from the majority gender while expanding the power of the 2nd Amendment and telling the planet to go f**k itself. And then the American people, as they usually do, started telling anyone who would listen — including the pollsters — that they wanted Democrats running the country. It is a large segment of the electorate that is newly active, intensely motivated and whose numbers should tip the scales against the Republicans. Who are these voters that are going to keep the Senate and the House in the hands of the Democrats? They are a group so huge, and yet, despite their numbers, they are unable to make campaign contributions to candidates, and they own no media, no corporations and hold few elective offices. Which almost guarantees they are being ignored by the press, pundits and pollsters during this all-important election.
