It was Trans Day of Remembrance on Sunday. On Saturday night, a shooter with a previous criminal record entered Club Q, a queer and trans safe space/bar in Colorado Springs, and opened fire. We lost 5 brothers and sisters and siblings on Saturday night. And 18 more seriously injured. And who took the shooter down? 2 unarmed random people. Not the cops. Because these two unarmed people actually care about protecting our community. The cops have always let us die. They will continue to let us die. Defund the pigs. Fund communities. Fund community care. This attack was a direct result of the growing anti LGBT (emphasis on the T) rhetoric happening in the states right now. In the world right now. Your words have power. Your words don’t pull the trigger, but they load the gun. Today I remember the five brothers, sisters and siblings we lost on Saturday night. I remember the countless queer and trans people, especially trans people of colour and trans femmes, murdered just for existing. Those folks dreamt up a world where trans people can walk down the street, embodied and without apology. It is our responsibility to continue to fight to make that dream possible.
