Pretending to be a pop star every night was downright terrifying for a 23-yr-old raised in purity culture. Exposing midriff or doing a hip roll was once the greatest cosmic risk. How could I savor that ExWives strut if I was taught my body was not my own, or that my flesh was vile and never to be trusted? We are constantly undoing, and this chapter was brought about by jazzy bass runs, ribcage isolations, women, and a pair of bedazzled blue boots. And 3 years later, I might finally understand “I Don’t Need Your Love”
