The ocean gives life to an incredible amount of biodiversity and vital ecosystems. It is also the biggest carbon sink on the planet, absorbing about a quarter of all carbon dioxide emissions.
But its health is threatened by human activity such as plastic pollution and destructive fishing. Indeed, the equivalent of two garbage trucks full of plastic are dumped into the ocean every minute, and over 90% of the plastic that ends up in the ocean lies on the seabed. Destructive fishing methods such as bottom trawling are bulldozing through Europe’s marine life, including in so-called “protected” areas, releasing enormous amounts of carbon back into the ocean.
If we restore our ocean to health and abundance, it can continue to be our biggest ally in the fight against climate change.
@Oceana has been conducting an expedition in the Alboran Sea, in the South of Spain, to research plastic pollution in the ocean depths and bottom trawling impacts on marine protected areas.

I recently sat down with @forbes to give a sneak peek of the future of SOA. We have been funding ocean solutions since 2018, when we created the world’s first ocean #accelerator program. After listening to the needs of our #entrepreneurs, we are now evolving the accelerator model into an “ecopreneur network” to ensure founders receive long-term continuous support, mentorship, and funding opportunities not limited to a finite cohort cycle.
SOA will meet #ecopreneurs where they are on their startup journey and provide guidance, exposure, community and access to capital – scaling the most impactful for-profit solutions to ocean and climate challenges. To date, we have provided nearly $1 million in funding to our startup solutions, which together have raised more than $228 million in total investment capital.
We’ve accelerated 45 startups so far…but that’s just the beginning. We need more solutions focusing on blue carbon, sustainable seafood, and pollution reduction to have any hope of fighting climate change and restoring the ocean in our lifetime. SOA is here to support these solutions and push governments and financial institutions to step up and do the same.
